OTC: MU’s Michael Dixon Uses Twitter & Antlers To Battle K-State Texters

“Around 11 a.m. Thursday morning, [Michael] Dixon posted a phone number that had called him persistently throughout the day on his Twitter account. .. Dixon went on to tweet seven [phone] numbers of Kansas State fans who had been pestering him. According to a phone directory on the Kansas State university website, two of those numbers appeared to belong to the recruiting chair and vice president of the Delta Upsilon fraternity at Kansas State.”
Laura Oberle, writer, Missourian
GH: Dixon reportedly had received “hundreds of prank calls and messages” from K-State fans as Mizzou and KSU prepare for their basketball game Saturday in Manhattan. In the old days students would send pizzas to the opposing players’ hotel rooms at 2:00 AM or play loud music in the hotel hallway to bother the team’s sleep. Technology has opened up player harassment to new venues. It has also allowed the targeted players to fight
back. Read on.

“After tweeting the first two numbers, Dixon tweeted the Antlers, an MU student fan group, telling them to, ‘get it done.’ ”
Laura Oberle, writer, Missourian
GH: The Antlers are probably guiltier of shenanigans like this than all the other Big 12 schools combined. Dixon knew who to go to for expert assistance.

“He (Dixon) knows he can come to us and say, ‘This guy’s an idiot. Take care of it.’ They were trying to distract him from his main goal, trying to get him off his game. We wanted to let him know we would do everything to make sure that didn’t happen.”
Mason Bartlett, a sophomore at MU  and a member of the Antlers, Missourian
GH: Who better to be able recognize an  idiot than one of the head idiots? Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

“The tweets went viral. Antlers and other fans alike responded by calling and texting the seven numbers Dixon tweeted to his 6,260 followers.”
Laura Oberle, writer, Missourian
GH: I would suggest that the next time the recruiting chair and vice president of the Delta Upsilon fraternity at Kansas State devises a plan to text the opposition, he entrust the services of a few on-campus IT nerds. Go see any Mission Impossible movie and you’ll immediately know that you don’t send a direct communication without bouncing it off an alternate server or three.

“When we do it, we get our facts. Before each game we get stat sheets on every player. We do our research.”
Mason Bartlett, who argued that the K-State fans did a poor job of researching Dixon’s importance to the Tiger team, Missourian
GH: Well, as long as your prank calls are well researched – have at it young man!

“I don’t know that we can ever prevent this stuff from happening. It’s what makes college athletics so interesting, these rivalries. We’re never going to be able to completely control
what happens on Twitter. It’s a tool of promotion that we use all the time, so we
can’t tell our guys they can’t be on Twitter.”
Shawn Davis, member of MU’s athletics media, Missourian
GH: Twitter has been credited with toppling government regimes. It is not your father’s pay phone.

“How many Mizzou players would start for KU? Three; Denmon, English, and Ratliff–Flip would battle Tyshawn. Tyshawn has more game, Flip turns it over less.”
Doug Gottlieb, of ESPN, responding to a question on Twitter
GH: When was the last time any ESPN analyst thought three players from MU would start for KU? The 1993-94 season? A few of those Tigers on that roster included Melvin Booker, Jevon Crudup, Derek Grimm, Julian Winfield, Kelly Thames, Jason Sutherland, Paul O’Liney, Chris Heller, Jed Frost and Marlo Finner.

“Height is so overrated. [Rebounding] is much more about desire and position.”
Gabe DeArmond, on Mizzou’s four-guard lineup competing against taller teams, 810 AM
GH: I still like height when it comes to hoops. Gabe made the point that Mizzou’s smaller players only give up a couple of inches in most cases. While a couple of inches might not seem like a lot when you’re reading a program, it means quite a bit on the court. Mizzou will likely struggle against a tall, long team like Baylor. It will be interesting
to see if MU’s quickness is enough to counter the Bear’s length.

“Kansas has executed some really nice half court sets [against K-State], and Jayhawk defense solid. Not a vintage Self team, but could still win the Big 12.”
Jay Bilas, Twitter

“Love how Self’s team loses in Elite 8 and suddenly he can’t coach — 7 league titles in a row — that is insane.”
Doug Gottlieb, Twitter
GH: Is anyone saying/writing that Self can’t coach? When you make close to $4-milion a year to coach college basketball, you need to expect a little heat. If KU loses nine or ten games this season that is exactly what Coach Self will feel.

“The Kansas Jayhawks better not go into Norman Oklahoma drunk on the success they had against Kansas State. They’re more talented than OU but not so talented that they can just roll the ball out on the floor.”
Soren Petro, 810 AM
GH: The MU/K-State game is at 12:30 Saturday and the KU/OU game is at 1:00. Not the best scheduling for us Kansas City-based fans – and we don’t even have Dan Beebe to blame for it!

“Funny thing about class not in session. Student section is full at KU, Place is on fire.”
Blair Kerkhoff, on the KU crowd at Allen Fieldhouse Tuesday night, Twitter
GH: 20,000 Kansas State fans are expected in Dallas tonight for the Cotton Bowl. At least some of those fans would typically be at Bramlage for the MU game on Saturday. It will be interesting to see if the Lair of the Glare can live up to its reputation, despite the migration to Dallas. I’m betting it will be as loud and packed as ever.

“Some of you actually missed me in my absence.”
Kevin Kietzman, mentioning he heard from some listeners during his year-end vacation, 810 AM

“I ain’t going anywhere! I just signed a new contract.”
Jack Harry, in how he responds to those viewers/listeners who tell him to go away and retire, 810 AM
GH: The OTC just released a long sigh of relief.

“I always love it when people call up and asked me, ‘Do you want to take this back?’ No! I don’t want to take anything back! I want to live my life! We’re going to have a lot of this over the years. Missouri fans, you’ve got to get over it. … I’m not taking back what
I said!”
Kevin Kietzman, after a caller upset him when he reminded Kietzman that he criticized Gary Pinkel for voting Stanford over Oklahoma State in his post-season poll, 810 AM
GH: These are the kind of immature comments I missed while Leabo and Clinkscale filled in for KK. The OTC is glad you’re back, Kietz.

“Fescoe can kiss my ass! I’m focusing on my show.”
Nick Wright, when informed on the air by his producer that Fescoe is unhappy with how messy Wright leaves the host work area each night, 610 AM
GH: Apparently, Nick didn’t miss his buddy Fescoe too much either while on break.

“Holly Rowe WILL beat the hell out of anybody who tries to steal her interview.”
Jake Gutierrez, 810 AM
GH: Here is the video of Rowe hip-checking and applying a forearm flipper to a much smaller blonde reporter in pursuit of Michigan’s head coach, Brady Hoke following the Sugar Bowl. Somebody give Charlie Weis Holly phone number. KU could use that kind of aggressiveness in their defensive line.

  1. M says:

Gottleib is close: Robinson and Ratliff would start side by side. English would move to the 3. Denmon starts on any team in the league. Flip over Taylor because that job would be all about feeding the other 4.

Dixon as the backup PG. Withey and Moore taking turns backing up Robinson and Ratliff. Pressey coming in for Denmon or English.

Releford and Teahan go to the far end of the bench.

  2. Merle Tagladucci says:

GH: Who better to be able recognize an idiot than one of the head idiots? Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

    Atta boy.

  3. Smartman says:

Nice to see the add for repairing anal fissures. Is that intended for MU fans?

Rebounding is about junk in the trunk. A good rebounder knows how to back that ass up. The Williams sisters could own the NBA. Lone exception, Billy beer belly Paultz.

Note to Cats, Liquid Ass sprayed behind the MU bench is more effective than tweeting.

    • Will says:

Liquid Ass spray? Nothing came up in my google search. :/

      • Gavin says:

Thanks, Will, for reporting back on that. I was about to launch my own, potentially risky, search. As I’m at the office, you saving me from it is appreciated.

      • Smartman says:

Go to amazon.com. Stuff is WICKED!

      • Smartman says:

Go to amazon.com. You can purchase it there.

        • Will says:

SmartAssMan is not lying…for $5.75 per bottle you get these fabulous product features:
Highly concentrated, super-horrible smelling fart spray
Smells like ASS … only worse
30ml (1 fl oz) size enough for many room-evacuating emissions
Excellent for the office, the ex & the neighbor. Let the games begin!
Simple application instructions are printed onto the bottle

          • chuck says:

            smartman is NOT lying.

That stuff puts out a smell that is so disgusting that it really is NOT a prank.

            God it is awful.

Seriously, you have to HATE someone to actually use this stuff.

The whole deal with Dixon and the KState fans was amusing to me. This is what we’re gonna miss when Mizzou goes to the SEC. Rivalries. It will take many years to build any strong rivalries like we have in the Big 12. It likely won’t happen in my lifetime. I can’t imagine the Antlers releasing a live alligator in the hotel where the Florida players are staying. Then again, its the Antlers so maybe…

I think Mizzou suffers their first loss tomorrow. They always struggle in Bramlage and Frank Martin’s rugged style of play seems to really take MU out of their game. I’ll say the game is in the 60′s and KState wins a close one. OU will take KU to the wire in Norman but the Hawks will pull it out.

The 1993-1994 team was probably my favorite Mizzou hoops team of all time. They got BLISTERED down in Arkansas by like 50 points early in the season and expectations were low. But then they started winning. And winning. And winning some more. Undefeated in the Big 8. Amazing what a team can accomplish when confidence is high and everyone buys in and believes.

    • Will says:

It doesn’t have to end…MU and K-State can play in KC just as easily as MU & ku. In fact, K-State could trump the chickenhawks by scheduling the game.

      • MUC says:

That would be fanfreakintastic. Where do I sign. ku can buy all the we are KANSAS city billboards they want but when it comes to helping kc KSU could really step up. Football and Bball. Not sure coach Synder would go for that though.

  5. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

LOL @ putz KSU students getting pimp slapped by Dixon. When you’re attending a schmuck ag school in the middle of nowhere Kansas, you should know better to mess with the bull.

  6. Hammy says:

Tyshawn has more “game” than Flip? What exactly is game? Flip turns it over less? Yes, he also avgs more assists and steals per game. Flip is faster. Maybe “game” means height. If that is the case then yes, Tyshawn has more “game”.

    • BlackJack says:

Let me put it to you in simple terms:

It means TT has more “playground” or “baller” skills, while PP is a more fundamentally sound, conventional player. It doesn’t necessarily mean TT is better than PP, so don’t get your panties in a bunch.

      • Will says:

By playground you mean there’s a set of bleachers next to the concrete slab where Turnover Taylor frequently throws the ball?

You have not seen PP play enough if you think this way. TT is a more consistent scorer. PP has the edge in all the other categories.

      • Hammy says:

which is also untrue. Flip is faster, quicker with the dribble and has better handles.

        my panties are fully unbunched.

  7. Kyle says:

GH: 20,000 Kansas State fans are expected in Dallas tonight for the Cotton Bowl.

I recall KK saying there would easily be 30,000 KSU’ers in Dallas for the Cotton Bowl. 20K is a pretty disappointing number, especially since it’s an easy drive.

    • LeesSummitCat says:

they had 20,000 at the pep rally – I’m expecting a minimum of 35k tonight – or KU’s crowd for homecoming ON CAMPUS

  8. Hot Carl says:

Jason Sutherland was/is a dick. That is all.

    • Hammy says:

we’re not here to talk about the past.

    • Jimbo says:

Speaking of Sutherland, you’re right he was/is a dick but I loved having him as a Tiger. A few years ago he started a brawl with the And 1 All-Stars during a charity game at Rock Bridge High School. Seeing this video reminds me of Sutherland’s play albeit it looks like this guy may have eaten Jason—

      • Merle Tagladucci says:

I’d like to see that fat farmboy try his tough guy routine just once against the kids at Ruskin, Southeast or any number of area KC high schools.

        • Jimbo says:

Agreed. I have no idea how he didn’t get kicked out of the game or otherwise end up on the receiving end of a cheap shot by the other team. And why does it look like he’s wearing work boots?

          • Merle Tagladucci says:

If I was a basketball coach at one of the other area schools up in Washington where this kid’s school is, I would be hustling to add one of the football team’s linebackers to my roster before I played this school. Let’s see how this farmboy reacts when someone his own size pushes his fat butt around the paint.

  9. Ron says:

Why is KK back from vacation today? You would think as a sports talk radio host in KC with a rooting interest in K-State he might be in Dallas “covering” the game. It’s interesting that none of these guys actually do any real coverage of sports teams. Soren got in trouble a few years back for criticizing some Royals players who said they had never seen him in the clubhouse, or knew who he was. Soren also makes sure he goes to radio row at the Super Bowl every year, but he never actually stays for the game. It’s like going skiing nd staying in the lodge all day. What kind of professionalism is that? Also, I wonder why Soren “covers” the golf tournament in Nevada every year? It’s the most boring week of radio in KC, bar none.
    Just wondering.

  10. j says:

ACTUALLY think ksu students harrassing mu players is pretty smart. We did it
against visiting teams in columbia. Some fans went to the oppossing teams hotel
and rolled up a big truck with huge speakers and played heavy metal music for
15 straight hours. The team must have loved that…ac-dc/poison/metallica…
and mu won the next day. Its college guys..have some fun.
