OTC: MU’s SEC Chant Getting Louder / Is Big 12 Talking Merge W/ ACC?

“Nice to SEC #1 and #2 in the polls! Just like football!”
Mike Kelly, voice of MU football and Basketball, as Kentucky and Mizzou were ranked first and second in Monday’s NCAA Men’s poll, Twitter
GH: Mizzou isn’t waiting until July to don the SEC garb. Tiger fans chanted “SEC! SEC! SEC!” following their bowl game win. Now Mike Kelly is tweaking The 12 with the Tigers lofty spot in the latest poll. Kansas, that team I left for mostly bleeding and unconscious weeks ago, is ranked fifth. What more could we here in KC ask for than their final hoop
dance be a tango rather than the waltz we witnessed in football?

“If you think this is going to fix what was wrong – it is not. Don’t think of this as; ‘We
are in the SEC now, everything is going to get better.’ There might not be another time in the next 20 years that Missouri basketball is ranked number-two in the country!”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: I believe one of KK’s greatest fears is that Mizzou experiences success in their new SEC conference. Another fear might be what you could refer to as “spousal.” Read on.

“It’s like a new girlfriend, guys – don’t expect her to be a better wife than your ex-wife.”
Kevin Kietzman, in a warning to Missouri fans who are excited about marrying the SEC, 810 AM
GH: There but for the Lovely Jessica goes KK’s alimony payment. Do I detect some buyer’s remorse here in KK’s comment about expecting your new girlfriend to be a better wife than your ex?

“As much as Kansas hates Missouri for breaking up the Big 12, that [Big 12 basketball]
tournament will take a hit once Missouri leaves. It will take a hit.”
Frank Boal, 810 AM
GH: None of us know how the attendance numbers will change once Missouri is no longer part of the Big 12 tourney here at Sprint Center. Much of it will depend on the future success of Kansas and Kansas State. Those two schools can carry the tourney with their rabid fan bases. But a drop from the top 25 by either will create some echoes inside
Sprint for a number of sessions.

“Interim Big 12 Commissioner Chuck Neinas has plans to expand the conference beyond the current 10 members to 14 or as many 16 members. Neinas believes that with
selective expansion the Big 12 could give the SEC competition for the best college football conference in the country while securing the future of the league. … ACC football schools such as Florida State, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Pitt and Maryland and BC have spoken with the Big 12 over the past few months about switching leagues despite the buyout the ACC added last fall to curtail such moves.”
Honas Sneed, a West Virginia Mountaineers blogger for EERinsider.com
GH: I have no idea what sources Honas Sneed has in regard to this post but it is getting some play nationally. Can you imagine how wickedly good the Big 12 would become if these ACC schools joined our fly-over conference? I don’t know how you would fit them all in or what kind of schedules it would produce but I like the thought even if it’s
pure rumor.

“Dude, A&M getting after KU–this is embarrassing– this is what KU looks like when Tyshawn doesn’t go for 28.”
Doug Gottlieb, during the A&M/KU game when the Aggies were trading leads with Kansas, Twitter
GH: Gottlieb has stated all season he thinks the Jayhawks are no better than a top-15 team. Gottlieb is a stubborn fellow. Despite their fifth-place ranking, he continues to downplay their status. Read on.

“Yes–two guys and a bunch of guys–have played above their level before today.”
Doug Gottlieb, responding to being asked during the A&M game if Kansas is overrated, Twitter
GH: But those “two guys” are POTY candidate Thomas Robinson and Tyshawn Taylor. How many do you need to be an elite team this season?

“[Tyshawn] Taylor is so freaking talented–he is as good off the ball as on it, shoots better off the bounce through.”
Doug Gottlieb, Twitter
GH: Gottlieb might not be too impressed with Kansas but he loves TT.

“Nobody has worked with Taylor’s shot. Elbow flies out and his footwork is inconsistent. Only a few CBK coaches teach shooting!”
Tom Penders, Twitter
GH: Penders often comes off sounding like the old man bitching about the kid’s ball landing on his side of the fence but he has a point here. Tyshawn’s jumper often looks like he just jumped off a diving board and changed his mind about the dive in mid leap.

“[Jared] Sullinger has been a much better offensive player than T-Rob and nearly his equal on the glass. He also has more help, carries lighter load. So it’s very reasonable to say you prefer Robinson, but to say it’s clear is, in my opinion, not correct. Unless dunk
highlights count.”
Andy Glockner, of SI.com, arguing with CBS’ Goodman about his statement that Thomas Robinson is the clear player of the year in college basketball, Twitter
GH: Dick Vitale all but christened Robinson as the POTY with his stream of accolades during the Baylor game. I think the award is his to lose. Is he the best player in the country? Who knows? But I like him at least as well as Sullinger. Let’s wait another month and see what happens.

“I’m telling you, write it down, Kansas isn’t going to be any worse than 15-3 [in the Big
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: Nothing would make KK happier to be wrong here – except maybe another new girlfriend.

“[Kansas] has not played on the road against any of the next four best teams [in the Big
12]. At home they have only faced two of those four. The question that I think to Jayhawk fans is now that the bar has been raised, what is now a successful season?”
Soren Petro, 810 AM
GH: What town does petro live in? The bar for Kansas basketball was never lowered. KU fans expect a Big 12 title every year – and why wouldn’t they? Self delivers more consistently than Jimmy Johns.

“I don’t think that’s all that negative if [Kansas] goes up there [to Iowa State] and
loses this Saturday.”
Kurtis Seaboldt, 810 AM
GH: Seaboldt made this comment more as a compliment to the Cyclones than a slight to KU. Losing in Ames is not an issue – unless you’re a Kansas fan – especially since Mizzou has won there this season. Saturday’s game in Ames will be fun to watch.

“You guys may know this, but Danny Manning never won in Ames.”
Fran Fraschilla, while talking to The Border Patrol, 810 AM
GH: I like Fraschilla. He is so much better and more prepared than the way-past-his-bedtime Bob Knight. But Fran, don’t treat Kansas fans like you would Texas fans. We know more about our local schools here in Kansas City than any national announcer is ever going to want to know.

“Students at KU don’t care about Self: They chanted Home of the Chiefs louder than ever. Too bad.”
Gary Bedore, after Self publicly admonished the KU students for their Arrowhead-like anthem ending, Twitter

“Bill will shake that off but Roy would be livid during his postgame press conference.”
Tom Penders, responding to Bedore tweet above, Twitter
GH: I miss Roy Boy’s postgame pressers. Nobody had an ego like Roy – not Carl Peterson, not Mark Mangino, not Jason Whitlock and not even Big Lew…well, now that I think about it, maybe Lew was pretty close.

“Bill Self goes all Frank Martin, he just does it in practice.”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: Doing it in practice is called coaching. Doing it on the sideline on television is called Pelini.

“I’m comfortable enough with [Jordan Henriquez] that he will be at practice today. After
we practice I’ll decide if he’ll travel [to Texas Tech]. Jordan is a phenomenal kid. Jordan is one of my all-time favorites. Jordan had lost sight of some of the things that he had done to make him a great player on our basketball team. Based on his words, I am comfortable that he is ready to be the player we need him to be.”
Frank Martin, after having dismissed Henriquez from the K-State team last week, 610 AM
GH: I almost always root for the players in these situations. I’m glad it looks like Henriquez is getting a second chance. If his coach thinks he deserves it, that’s good enough for me.

“I’d like to see younger pictures of Holly Rowe. It’s hard to see her ever being cute.”
Carrington Harrison, Twitter
GH: Harrington is young – as in just out of college [or maybe still should be in college]. He will soon learn that every hot chick eventually succumbs to Holly Rowe status. Some, like Holly, dine before their time and begin to resemble swine.

  1. kathy says:

Your dislike of Kevin Kietzman is bordering on ridiculous. I agree that some of his commentary is crazy. Your personal attacks are just as crazy.

  2. sean says:

I gave up Kietzman a year or so ago because his ego was fogging up my windshield. He is the new Don Fortune. Thank goodness for XM and a little bit of Nick Wright mixed in.

Anyway, the Kietzman wife/girlfriend/alimony/etc references seem more than a bit odd and over-the-top. Could your point have been made without the private life references?

    • The Word says:

“I gave up Kietzman a year or so ago because his ego was fogging up my windshield. He is the new Don Fortune. Thank goodness for XM and a little bit of Nick Wright mixed in.”

I disagree, the more I listen to national shows and Nick Wright, the more I turn back to KK.

Say what you will about KK, but at least he or his dad won’t sue you if you are critical of him. Can’t say the same of Wright.

    • Greg Hall says:

I am not nearly as worried about offending KK as some. I think he can handle the barbs. Do you get offended when Jay Leno or Letterman or Conan or SNL make light of a person’s personal life? While it might not be everyone’s cup of stew, it’s kind of how I roll.

      • shecky says:

The difference, Greg, is that Leno/Letterman don’t come off as bitter, old men jealous of other’s success. When you “roll” that way, particularly when talking about KK, you come off as petty. And the rest of your opinions and criticisms, which usually have merit, lose credibility as a result.

OTC can be an excellent, and much needed, column when you put aside the petty comments and stay out of your own way.

        • Jim says:

Good Lord, people! It’s called humor! Taking KK down from his holier than thou soapbox is entertaining. How anyone gets the impression of GH being “petty” is beyond me. Face it, KK is his own worst enemy. Calling him out on ridiculous statements is PART of what this website is about. GH poking fun at those statements or calling attention to the hypocrisy of it all is the other part. Hold your skirt down, Kathy, if you want to be part of this forum. It’s gets a bit rough in here at times.

          • JP says:

KK’s personal life is what it is. It has been documented and we all know the details, tawdry though they are. The problem is when he gets on the moral high horse, the hypocricy just slips through the radio like a mist. That is what GH points out. KK makes a lot of money for doing very little prep work on his show, he can take the barbs. Ask the fired 810 employees, who couldn’t take anymore paycuts if they find it funny. I doubt KK cut his salary.

Bottom line, KK can take the hits. Lighten up people!!!

          • trajantiborgermanicus says:

    • Babe Ruthless says:

The KK wife stuff is fair game. When the split was 1st happening, a few years ago, he talked openly about it on the air one day. If he wanted to keep it a personal, private matter he should not have used his public forum to discuss it.

I once asked someone who works at 810 what KK was like..the answer was ‘exactly what you think he’s like’. There you go.

  3. Scanit says:

Coming to GH’s defense, not that he needs help: these people are public figures. They made themselves public figures. Their personal lives are fair game, and they don’t hesitate to talk about the personal lives of players, coaches, etc.

  4. Keith says:

Greg, all of this Facebook and twitter share stuff makes this unreadable. It is covering half of my screen on my droid phone

  5. JT says:

    Thank you.

  6. JT says:

Disliking kk is an easy taste to acquire unless you are a rabid purple kitty fan. Even then if you are loyal to your wife past her 35th birthday it should be easy to understand.

  7. kathy says:

So, Missouri is pretending they are already in the sec? Then, no Big 12 tournament? Will the sec go ahead and let them play in their post season tourney?

  8. JHawkScott says:

Mizzou has the most impressive conference resume. I still think KU wins it, but wins at Baylor and at Iowa State are damn nice.

  9. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

What that moron Kietzman fails to recognize or admit is that sometimes a relationship is irrevocably broken, and it’s best if both parties move on. And alot of times, the hot new girlfriend ends up being a 10 times better wife than the first one was. (I can speak from personal experience.) That applies to the MU/SEC/Big 12-4+2 scenario as well.

  10. Smartman says:

For what it’s worth the share stuff is showing up on my iPad too.

KK is the Newt Gingrich of KC radio. Nick Wright is the Ron Paul, even though he should technically be Herman Cain. Frank Boal is Jon Huntsman. Jack Harry is Bob Beckel. Bob Fescoe is Joe Biden. Clink is Jay Carney.

Some humility now will save the Tigers fans some embarraassment down the road. My offer to Harley is open to any takers. $1000.00 to your charity or mine if the Tiger’s do or don’t make the FINAL FOUR. I’m also willing to make this a standing annual bet.

We get it. SEC ya! You’re like the neighbor that keeps talking about the 2011 C-Class they bought in June like it’s still a new car.

  11. mancow555 says:

Missouri is going to SEC!? When did this happen? I guess Missouri has always underachieved, so maybe this will be what they need to motivate them to finally succeed in a sport.

  12. JFP says:

KK drives me insane, but I find Wright unlistenable. His voice is so grating I don’t care what he says. Where does it leave one?

Folks have been making jokes about “drinking games” for political speeches and debates. Here’s one for KK’s show…have a drink every time he says the words “this league.” You’ll be hammered by the end of his monologue.

I understand where folks might not like your latest comments about KK, Greg. Sounds like you have a bitter personal grudge, which if you do, hey fine. Won’r stop me from reading.

    • Jess says:

I think that Greg cannot win. You are damned if you do, damned if you don’t. He calls Nick W on his BS and people want to why he has a grudge with him. Then he calls KK on his BS and now people want to know why he has a grudge with him. These people are not untouchable, they are in the public eye and when that are jackasses, they deserve to get called on it. KK got caught getting a BJ from his new bride in a parking lot, got divorced. The new girlfriend quote was weird coming from him, that is why Greg mentioned it.

      • Greg Hall says:

I understand that I too deserve the barbs as well. When you write or speak with an edge, you should expect to be the recipient of some acrimony – which is not the same as alimony.

Please read much of my stuff with a hint of humor, as it is written.

        • JFP says:

I get all that, sure. All I was saying was I could see where someone would take issue with you.

Past transgressions in one’s personal life disqualify one from making an analogy (albeit a lame one) about sports? If that were the case, no one could talk about sports. Was it because he was referring to Missouri that it struck such a nerve? If we was talking about K-State would the reaction have been the same?

Like I said, bothers me not one way or the other. I could care less about KK’s personal life. All he is to me is the lesser of two evils in KC sports talk drive time. Keep up the good work, Greg.

  13. Bob Loblaw says:

Can’t believe no one’s discussed the Big 12 / ACC merger rumor, but then again maybe everyone has conference realignment burnout. Anyway, if the ACC schools merge with the Big 12, I’m trying to think of structure scenarios. Perhaps take the 8 “original” Big 12 schools and make them a division (maybe separate further into 2 pods, I’ve heard) and then combine the 2 newbies (TCU and WV) with the ACC 6? It would kind of divide between Midwest/East divisions (with the exception of TCU doesn’t quite fit with the East, but then again MU doesn’t quite fit in the SEC East either):

    _Midwest Division_
    Kansas St
    Iowa St
    Ok St
    Texas Tech

    _East Division_
    Georgia Tech
    West Virginia
    Florida St

Round robin in each division would produce 7 games, then play 2 from the other division with 3 non-con games. After typing all of this out, it doesn’t seem as bizarre as it originally did when I first heard the rumor.

    • Greg Hall says:

That is one HELLUVA super conference…in both football and basketball.

      • Smartman says:

Texas would NEVER agree to this. The rest of the non Big XII Schools would never agree to put up with Texas’ bullshit. It makes for great reading like bathroom wall scribbles.

Here I sit buns a flexin
Just gave birth to another Texan

Flush twice, it’s a long way to Columbia

I didn’t know Charlie Weiss adopted some kids. I hear he has three Chins.

    • Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

No one is discussing it because it’s a ridiculous notion put forth by some toothless yak in West Virginia and nowhere else.

  14. Ssiknaf says:

What’s next? KK asking for an “open” radio show?

He’s a twit. Yup. Custom made for that word.

  15. brett says:

since when did the unpaid WHB interns get assigned to post on OTC?

  16. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Here’s some great information from Clay Travis. He’s been dead on correct with everything he’s written in regards to conference realignment. He had Mizzou moving to the SEC long before anyone else. If there’s a guy who knows the inner workings of the SEC, it’s Clay Travis.

  17. kansas City Guy says:

Thanks for bringing up the KK comment about the SEC being MU’s hot new girlfriend. I about drove my car off of the road when I heard the adulterer talking about Ex wives. I wonder what a hummer in Mission Hills cost him? Or as Klinckscale would say- “Why would anyone want a Hummer?”.

  18. TangoAlphaLima says:

Greg, you’ve gone soft. Back in the day, you would have referred to KK’s girlfriend as Leatherface, not Lovely Jessica.
