OTC: Ravens Coming To Arrowhead For Chiefs’ Scalp / GH In Chicago For Marathon

“We all know Chiefs haven’t led during a game this season. But they’ve also been behind for 204 minutes out of a possible 249. That’s the definition of a rotten team. More ugly Chiefs stats: They fell behind by as many as 23 vs Atlanta, 32 vs. Buffalo, 18 vs New Orleans and 21 vs San Diego.”
Adam Teicher, @adamteicher, Twitter
GH: This does not make me optimistic for the Chiefs’ game Sunday against Baltimore or the remainder of their schedule. If you can’t get the lead, you can’t win.

“I think Baltimore is just a shade better than Atlanta.”
Mitch Holthus, 810 AM
GH: Remember the Chiefs’ opener against Atlanta? This does not look good.

“Crystal clean. As clean as you can find. White-glove clean.”
Mitch Holthus, on the Chiefs need to play a clean, no-turnovers game against the Ravens, 810 AM

“[Joe] Flacco is at the top of his game and he has come along beautifully.”
Kevin Harlan, 810 AM
GH: Flacco has slowly morphed from an overhyped young quarterback into one of the league’s best veteran signal callers. He is exactly what the Chiefs’ fans wish they had but have never know.

“My thesis basically [for the Chiefs] to win this week is to replicate the Green Bay game from last season.”
Mitch Holthus, 810 AM
GH: We might have a better chance at coming up with the diagram for Star Trek’s replicator than a repeat of that Green Bay win.

“Baltimore is as good as there is. Are they as good as Houston? I don’t know if anybody is as good as Houston.”
Kevin Harlan, 810 AM
GH: How did Houston get so good while the Chiefs continue to be Chefs?

“Unitas had an unfair advantage because 46 of his touchdown passes came against Jayice [Pearson].”
Pete Enich, on Drew Brees closing in on Unitas’ 47-game TD pass streak, to 810 AM
GH: I wonder if Jayice listens to Stump the Chumps?

“I think it’s personal now with you and Pioli because of that interview. He won’t come on the program now… ”
Jack Harry, to Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: I am not sure if Mad Jack was taking a verbal swat at KK or just stating what he knows. But his comment barely phased KK.

“I don’t think he will [come on the show] but he hasn’t said that to me. I’ve got no issues with anybody as far as I think.”
Kevin Kietzman, responding to Harry’s above comment, 810 AM
GH: I would like to see the local media be so tough on Pioli that he bans himself from every radio show, every TV show and every newspaper. We need to turn up the heat on the GM to Babb levels.

“While I’m at it, putting up a statue of a coach in front of a basketball arena or football stadium is plain stupid.”
Fran Fraschilla, @franfraschilla, Twitter
GH: So who is worthy of a statue…only animals? All men have frailties. Whether they are leaders of war, leaders of business or leaders of sport – great men have been known to err. Statues are fine – and easily removed – just ask Penn State.

“I can’t remember the last time I was so excited about a football game. I might get a sleeping bag & park myself @ the Horseshoe!!!! Let’s go”
Frank Martin, @FrankMartin_SC, expressing his giddiness over the UGA/USC game, Twitter
GH: Do nomad coaches like Martin realize that real fans take comments like this as an insult to their intelligence? So now all of a sudden Frank is a crazed Cock football fan? Sure, coach.

“I don’t yell much. I whistle. I’ve got a voice to protect.”
Kevin Kietzman, on how he cheers at a Kansas State game, 810 AM

“Which will be more exciting: Kansas @ K-State, Ravens @ Chiefs, or Vandy @ Missouri? I’m guessing Weis vs. Snyder.”
Neal Jones, @NealJoneskctv5
GH: K-State wins by 50. Mizzou struggles but sneaks out with a six-point win over a game Vandy. The Ravens beat KC 34-14 in another blowout loss.

“Having been a runner for the last 32 years, and having competed for a season of track and cross country at the University of Delaware (I was arguably one of the nation’s worst 100 Division I runners), and having completed 11 marathons, I can tell you — with 100% certainty — that when Paul Ryan says (more or less), ‘Oops, simple mistake,’ he is full of it. For those of you who don’t run, a 4:01 marathoner insisting he broke three hours is the equivalent of a .220 hitter speaking of a .310 average. It’s a retired small-town mayor looking back at his time as a U.S. senator; a dive-bar rock band bragging of once opening for KISS at Madison Square Garden. In this world of ours, there are exaggerations (‘She looked just like Halle Berry!’), there are boasts (‘Hell, gimme a week in the pool and I’ll destroy Michael Phelps!’) and there are flat-out, straight-up, no-holds-barred lies. This is a flat-out, straight-up, no-holds-barred lie.”
Jeff Pearlman, writer, on Paul Ryan stating he ran a sub-three-hour marathon 20 years ago when it was actually over four hours, CNN.com
GH: I will be in Chicago this weekend to run the Chicago Marathon with 45,000 others Sunday morning. I promise not to lie about my finishing time – but I may bore some of you with a recap of my race next week.

  1. Ramon Martinez says:

Greg I have no problem reading a marathon recap. That’s quite an accomplishment. I will be running a 5k down here in southeast Kansas. Now that would be a boring recap !

  2. The Smartman says:

Good luck in Chicago Gregger. At least you won’t have to worry about heat. As always I look forward to your recap. God knows it will be far more interesting and unpredictable than anything else going on locally this weekend. Don’t forget to tape your nipples.

    • Greg Hall says:

Got the nips covered, smartman. Saw one weather forecast calling for “ice pellets” Sunday morning in Chicago. That would be way different than 88 degrees in Boston last April.

  3. chuck says:

Couple weekends ago, 50 people got shot in Chicago. 11 died.

    Your pretty fast, right?

    Be careful and represent.

    :)

  4. Ronnie says:

Good Luck Greg. I always look forward to a good race report/recap. Those who are bored by it can just skip it. Are you going to be running KC this year?

  5. tigerdan4 says:

My predictions: Mizzou plays our best game of the season and wins big over Vandy. Chiefs crap the bed again and get smoked by the Ravens. Twitter and talk radio will be active after 3:00 on Sunday and all day Monday with venom towards Pioli. Big 12(10) football fails to register on my radar so I have no comments on it. Greg, good luck in Chicago.

    • Baghdad Robert says:

admit it Dan – you can’t quit the Big 12 (10- good one!). I will enjoy watching the brothers Franklin battling it out tomorrow, and I think the SEC is overrated and full of mediocre schools. Kumbaya brother!

  6. DodgerHawki says:

Your marathon recaps are must-reads. As a running newbie who hasn’t advanced beyond a 10k, I find the marathon stories a joy.
