“This is truly the best week in KC, and it all begins this morning. The @KCStar is your #Big12 pal, so drop by often!”
Jeff Rosen, @jeff_rosen88, sports editor of The Kansas City Star, Twitter
GH: One of the smartest things the Big 12 did is refuse to listen to those who did not want the men’s tournament to remain in Kansas City after MU moved to the SEC. There was a lot of wailing from the sports talk show shock jocks in town at that time, asking how you could host the tourney in a state without a team. Tell that to the tens of thousands of folks who are partying at the P&L this week.
“The good thing is the weekend starts on Thursday this week. We are going to be covering the hell out of the tournament.”
Nate Bukaty, on the Big 12 tournament being in town this week, 810 AM
GH: I cannot imagine that there is much productive work getting done in Kansas City after 11:00 AM Thursday morning. How many of you will be getting paid to follow the tourney?
“I think the atmosphere will be dead Thursday night at Sprint Center.”
Steven St. John, on the evening games Thursday featuring no local draws in OU, West Virginia and Texas-based schools, 810 AM
GH: I don’t understand why the Big 12 doesn’t adjust game times to maximize their audience at all sessions. The three schools who drive attendance are Kansas, K-State and Iowa State. All three will be playing in Thursday’s afternoon session. This leaves the less popular teams — Baylor, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia – for the evening session. Teams might bitch about having a few less hours of rest time than their opponent, but I would make sure that Kansas and K-State always played their Thursday games in different sessions, despite their seed.
“Naadir has the keys; he’s got to drive the car. I really think it’s just on Naadir. If he’s ready to do that today (against Oklahoma State), they’re going to have a different Kansas team. If Naadir doesn’t want to guard today, everybody’s going to do what Naadir does. I have faith that he’s going to realize this is the big stage and it’s time to play defense.”
Elijah Johnson, former teammate of Naadir at KU, 810 AM
“I think Kansas fans need to toughen up (over losing Embiid). Look at those kids you’ve got coming off the bench! It’s not like you’ve got me coming off the bench to sub for Joel Embiid. I think there are still a lot of capable bodies on this KU squad and I think they need to realize that.”
Jay Heidrick, former K-State basketball player, 810 AM
“Kansas fans take everything as an insult. They really do – unless you’re clad head-to-toe in Rock Chalk Jayhawk.”
TJ Carpenter, evening host on 810 AM
GH: Kansas fans have been the target of a lot of 810’s programming this week. Kevin Kietzman has basically devoted his afternoon show to Jayhawk trolling. He continued Wednesday on both the air and in an online blog. KK just cannot get enough of that Kansas attention the Hawk fans so eagerly shower upon him. Read on.
“As a Kansas fan, you can be as mad as you want but you’re now getting more information (about Joel Embiid’s injury) because of this show.”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: Tom Keegan, the columnist for the Lawrence Journal-World confirmed this point when he came on KK’s show Wednesday and said Self’s quotes about Embiid’s injury timeline were due to Kietzman’s attack on the Kansas basketball coach and program the day before.
“I have a world of respect for Tom Keegan but this (article on KUSports.com) was nothing more than a recruiting letter.”
Kevin Kietzman, on Keegan’s article that quoted Bill Self discussing the timeline of Embiid’s injury, 810 AM
GH: This is why I have little respect for Kietzman’s work. How can he respect a columnist who he believes uses his newspaper to prop up the local team he is supposed to cover? If KK believes Keegan is simply a mouthpiece for Bill Self and his basketball program, why isn’t he as tough on his golfing buddy as he is on the head coach? It is hard to argue that whether you agree with what Self has done or not, he’s doing his job. But if Keegan is simply a lap dog for Self, he deserves every bit of the criticism Kietzman has hurled at Self.
“I am just going to say it. I am done responding to anyone who accuses me of having an agenda or being biased. I got off the air (Tuesday) and I had 198 Twitter things. I took my thumb and voop, voop – they’re gone!”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
“I cannot, and will not, take any e-mail or Tweet seriously that accuses me or our show of bias. … no matter who your team is or what the issue is, know this. If you reach out to me in any way accusing me of an agenda or bias, I will laugh inside and you will have just complimented me on doing my job extremely well. It’s worked for nearly 17 years so pack your lunch. I’ve got at least 17 more left if I choose.”
Kevin Kietzman, in an open letter to his audience, whb810.com
GH: Somewhere along the road of Kietzman rising from Fox 4’s third-string sports guy – a job I thought he did very well – to becoming part owner of the city’s most popular sports talk radio station, Kevin forgot how he got where he is. His station’s slogan now mocks his own words. Powered by fans? Maybe their referring to the HVAC system at WHB?
“I feel your sympathy, Kevin. We all know that Kansas is the beast that feeds many in this city. … I can feel your pain. … These people don’t have to agree with us. We never asked for that.””
Jack Harry, 810 AM
GH: Kietzman surrounds himself with people who agree with him – or in Jack Harry’s case feel sorry for him. If KK really wants to prove he’s unbiased than why not have the courage to include contrasting opinions on BTL? Instead, he has chosen to tell us he will no longer read the differing opinions from his audience via email or Twitter. Yeah, we feel your pain, Kevin.
“Your team sucks. Your organization sucks. They’ve been very lucky. By the way, I’ve had better pizza in prison than I’ve had in ST. Louis.”
Danny Parkins, as he hung up on a caller from St. Louis who identified himself as a Cardinals fan, 610 AM
GH: It does not surprise me that Parkins graduated from the same school as Soren Petro. They both seem to have the same limited vocabulary when it comes to handling callers.
“We all knew the first few days of free agency were going to be tough because the Chiefs aren’t linked with anyone. The only rumors about the Chiefs are about players leaving.”
Steven St. John, 810 AM
GH: After the news that Darren Sproles signed with the Eagles this morning, it looks like the Chiefs are adamant about building through the draft this offseason. The problem with that is they are going to need about 15 draft picks.
“The smart teams wait and pluck from the second wave of free agents. I think that’s where the smart deals are made.”
Eric Edholm, NFL analyst for YahooSports.com, 610 AM
GH: Eric sounds like he learned his football at the knee of Carl Peterson. If John Elway is dumb, send some of that idiocy our way.
“(Yordano) Ventura struck out Donaldson on 102-mph fastball, according to Athletics’ radar gun. One scout said, ‘I saw a lot of 101s.’ ”
Ken Rosenthal, @Ken_Rosenthal, on the young Royals pitcher’s performance Wednesday, Twitter
GH: Could this be the Royals’ Wacha Wacha?
“Right now I’ve heard they want that kid (Yordano Ventura) to make the team. It’s just up to him to go out and show it.”
Mike McFarlane, on the Royals rookie flame-thrower, 810 AM
GH: I will never understand the caution that MLB teams use with their young pitchers. Ventura was brilliant in the minors last year and basically wasted one of his best years. His shelf life with his slight build is likely three seasons at most before he develops arm trouble. Why not use him while he’s young and healthy?
“Every Royals game in September is on TV. When I look at the television schedule and see that it’s the most ever, it’s good to see that they’re all in. The Royals have moved past ‘phone-check’ status for me. With 156 games on television, that tells me that they’re expecting me to watch every single game. I’m very excited that for the first time probably since 2004, fan expectations and team expectations seem to be in the same place.”
