OTC: Chiefs’ Charles In Charge Of Changing The Game / Can Chiefs Improve W/O Roster Changes?

“I’m changing the game for us, for the running backs. Running and catching the ball, that’s hard to defend. I can’t let nobody stop me.”
Jamaal Charles, Chiefs Kingdom Show, in an interview with Mitch Holthus, 810 AM
GH: I don’t always understand Jamaal’s version of Neilbonics but he is one helluva football player. I don’t know if he is changing the game for running backs but he is definitely changing this city’s reputation around the NFL…if not quite on the local radio dial. Read on.

“The Chiefs have been the best team in the league during the least important part of the season.”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: I can almost hear KK rooting against the Chiefs each week. Every win seems to make him even more intent on hammering away at how this team really has no business being undefeated and atop Peyton Manning’s Broncos in the AFC West. Where have we heard this attitude before from Kietz? Oh yeah, during the Royals’ season. Kevin might be ready to move to Scottsdale.

“Buffalo does sound like a trap game, by the way.”
Soren Petro, 810 AM
GH: Can teams that were 2-14 a season ago have trap games on the road? No. Every game the Chiefs play is going to be a nail-biter. The Chiefs aren’t much better than most of the teams in the NFL but it doesn’t look like any of these teams are. But with eight wins, we are looking pretty damn good shuffling into Buffalo.

“The reality is the Chiefs don’t want to throw the ball downfield more so they are probably not even in the market for a wide receiver.”
Kevin Kietzman, discussing possible moves by the Chiefs prior to the NFL trade deadline, 810 AM
GH: The reality is the Chiefs drafted an offensive tackle with their first overall pick and KK is still pissed about it.

“This (Chiefs offense) is an average offense. They are 16th in the NFL. They are perfectly average. I guess that’s what we do for a living being on the air for four hours a day, we just have to bitch about something constantly. Could the offense be better? Yes. But we talk about it like it’s (as bad) as the 2003 defense. That was one of the three worst defenses in the NFL! This offense isn’t that bad. It’s mediocre.”
Nate Bukaty, 810 AM
GH: Mediocre never sounded so good.

“People nationally are a little bit livid at the Kansas City Chiefs because their defense is hurting offensive numbers around the league and shutting down people’s fantasy football numbers. I think that’s why the Chiefs aren’t getting more praise and accolades. The Chiefs are basically doing something the NFL doesn’t allow and that’s going out there and stopping the opposition. That’s why people are dumping on the Chiefs.”
Bob Fescoe, 610 AM
GH: If you didn’t think Fescoe was certified goofy before…well.

“This roster could win a Super Bowl if they get better the second half of the season. … Dwayne Bowe needs to be a much better player the second half of the season.”
Danny Parkins, 610 AM
GH: I don’t think many would disagree with the premise that the Chiefs need to improve top have success in the postseason. But why are so many discounting that this might happen? Bowe just might go Megatron in November and December! But if he doesn’t and the Chiefs don’t – well, we had these first eight weeks.

“I might fear San Diego a little bit more (than Denver). I think Denver is going to force the best out of the Chiefs.”
Soren Petro, 810 AM
GH: San Diego is the biggest sleeper in the NFL right now. They could end up winning the AFC West while everyone else is concentrating on the Chiefs and Broncos. Also – are the Chargers bolting to LA?

“I think this (Missouri football) team is changing that (perception about the school’s sports jinx). I think this team doesn’t think about a ceiling. I think this team is pretty locked in.”
Vahe Gregorian, on the Tigers not being burdened with Mizzou’s past history of gridiron disappointment and failure, 810 AM
GH: Gregorian made this comment before the devastating loss to South Carolina but the next few weeks are when we find out how accurate he is or is not. Good teams lose all the time. Great teams lose and use it to make sure they don’t lose again.

“Well Nate, if I was 18 years old and they told me my first start was against Oklahoma I might be a little nervous too.”
John Kirby, of JayhawkSlant.com, after Nate Bukaty mentioned he thought that KU’s freshman quarterback, Montell Cozart, “looked a little antsy,” 810 AM

“Maybe because they do it so often that the official probably said, ‘I’m gonna be calling penalties all night.’”
Charlie Weis, to a caller asking why Baylor was not flagged for taunting after their first touchdown antics in the end zone, Hawk Talk, 610 AM
GH: I will miss Charlie’s press conferences once he is gone.

“You could have got a Rams ticket for $9 tonight. Meanwhile, eight blocks away, a Cardinals ticket would cost you $400.”
Steve Levy, sports anchor, on St. Louis hosting both MNF and the World Series Monday night, ESPN
GH: Nine bucks sounds kind of high for the Rams and that stinker of a dome.

“Nobody takes our ball!”
Kareem Richardson, the new head coach of UMKC basketball, in a radio ad, 810 AM
GH: I am excited about the Roos having a new head coach and their schedule in the WAC – but I have no idea what “nobody takes our ball” is supposed to mean in this commercial.

“Hey guys! This is Chiefs John…”
Chiefs John, in a radio ad for a local car dealership, 810 AM
GH: Love Chiefs John calling into The Border Patrol. Hate Chiefs John as a spokesperson for ANYTHING. Just ear-drum piercing radio.

“He’s a master of managing egos and understanding kids. And getting them to understand where they need to sacrifice. That’s a hard thing to do.”
Greg Gurley, on KU’s Bill Self, as he enters another season with his most talented squad yet at KU, 610 AM
GH: Self might be the best coach at any level in any sport. How good do I think he is? I think he could take over the KU football program and win. That’s good.

“I don’t think (the high expectations) are unfair. It’s Kansas. Anything other than a Final Four is a disappointment. Failure is probably not the right word but (not making the Final Four) would be disappointing.”
Greg Gurley, on KU’s Bill Self, 610 AM
GH: It’s October 29th and Kansas fans expect to be in the Final Four or they’ll want to know the reason why. I LOVE those kinds of expectations.

“I watched four episodes of (Entourage) and I was bored out of my mind.”
Nate Bukaty, after SSJ informed his audience that the HBO show has officially announced it will be releasing a movie, 810 AM
GH: Odd, since Nate always reminded me of E.

Wife: “So is the World Series over?”
Me: “No. But there’s no game today because it’s a travel day.”
Wife: “What’s that mean?”
Me: “They take a day off to travel from St. Louis to Boston for the final two games.”
Wife: “Oh, so they can play on their home course?”

  1. Mike says:

I’m with Nate. I jumped in to Entourage the last couple seasons. Other than some outstanding eye candy, I was bored with it. I dunno…Jeremy Piven’s character, Ari, was a big-time asshole (also in real life, apparently), entertaining asshole, yes, but I never really noticed any real depth of character with any of them on the show. Maybe that’s how the creators wanted it.
Per the Chiefs, they went up against some statistically significant defenses the first half of the season, though it wasn’t reflected in the opponents’ records. Hopefully the team can use the bye to get some quiet guys more involved (Bowe).

  2. Joe Blow says:

GH: Self might be the best coach at any level in any sport. How good do I think he is? I think he could take over the KU football program and win. That’s good.

Like all of those NCAA championships he won at Illinois..

    • Red says:

He was building a pretty good team there. Natties are hard to come by but he was going to have a good number of final four shots there with the Chicago talent that Duke and others always poach.

    • BlackJack says:

Yeah, because NCAA chamionships are the sole method of judging how good a coach is, right?

  3. Phaedrus says:

Has anyone mentioned that the location of the Super Bowl this year (NY) favors a defensive-minded team?

I don’t know if the Chiefs can make it there, but with the way everything else is lining up for them, I wouldn’t be shocked…

  4. Java Man says:

I can see the Chiefs and Broncos flipping spots, but hard to imagine the Chargers getting back in the game as division winners. All three teams still have both remaining games against each other. If the Chargers can manage a sweep against both, hats off to them.

  5. Arte says:

If Bukaty is E, does that mean St. John is Turtle?

  6. Say What? says:

Buffalo absolutely is a trap game. How many times in the past does a team lose because they are looking ahead to a tough game? In this case, it is the premier game of the season in the entire NFL, Chiefs @ Broncos, and not only that it’s also a week before the bye. Guys are ready for a week off so they can heal and relax.

Add to that the Chiefs have about 5-12-1 in their history going to Buffalo. The last time they won a game in Buffalo was 1986.

So if you don’t want to call it a trap game we can call it a game in a place where the Chiefs rarely win, a week before the bye and just in front of their toughest game of the year. Nothing to worry about.

    • Kyle says:

I think it would be a trap game if the Broncos game was the next week. With a bye coming up I think we will see a very focused Chiefs team. Trap game is Nov. 24 vs. Chargers. That one worries me because it is sandwiched between 2 Broncos games.

      • Hot Carl says:

“Trap game” is one of the dumbest terms in all of sport but especially in reference to the NFL. With the possible exception of Jacksonville, just about any team can win on any given weekend.

  7. Observer says:

If you troll back to an earlier post comment, I mentioned where I feared the Chargers more than the Broncos. However, I’m not sure if I want Petro agreeing with me … don’t like what that may imply. Yet, I’m of the opinion that the Chargers play well on both sides of the ball and do have a top-level quarterback that makes Smith look snakebit shy. Even with his erratic play, I’ll take Rivers any day over Smith. I do, so very much, hope the Chiefs rise above their downside and continue to win as they have done in the last eight weeks. It’s certainly been fun so far.

  8. Biff says:

“I don’t think (the high expectations) are unfair. It’s Kansas. Anything other than a Final Four is a disappointment. Failure is probably not the right word but (not making the Final Four) would be disappointing.”
Greg Gurley, on KU’s Bill Self, 610 AM
GH: It’s October 29th and Kansas fans expect to be in the Final Four or they’ll want to know the reason why. I LOVE those kinds of expectations.

I was at a sports bar watching the game last night. The place was packed , standing room only. They even had a TV on the outside patio and people brought chairs to watch sitting on the sidewalk . Never seen anything like that for any game. I hope KU makes a final four but everyone knows it takes a lot of luck to get there.

  9. Jim says:

Poor KK. Chiefs don’t throw the ball down field. The QB play has been average to below average. They didn’t draft a QB. D. Bowe hasn’t thrown a fit on the sideline. Andy Reid runs a horse and buggy offense that just dinks and dunks. And yet…..8-0. That must be killing the dude.

  10. “Chiefs John,” with that demented laugh. Reminds me of Mickey Doyle on Boardwalk Empire. Sends chills up my spine. Put that man out to pasture or something.

  11. JP says:

Petro is stoned with his Charger love. They are a mediocre team, capable of beating anyone and losing to anyone. I say they lose to Washington this week. As for KK, he will change his tune once the playoffs near. Expect to hear something like “The Chiefs can not Lose this game, they should be in the Super Bowl” building up expectations so that when they don’t meet them, he can do his “See I Told You So”.

  12. JFP says:

Aren’t all games “trap games” when you are undefeated?

There seems to come a point in every sport where being undefeated at a certain point becomes more of a burden than an accomplishment. Is there that much difference going into Denver at 8-1 than 9-0?

  13. Elijah Likes Your Jewels says:

A great coach does not sit and watch his best player not attempt a FG in the last FIFTEEN MINUTES of a tournament game (Michigan.) Self has fattened up in the worst BCS basketball league in the nation in his ten years then gags annually in the Dance. He is a missed three pointer by Davidson and an all time collapse by Memephis from being one of the all time underachievers. He is SO OVERRATED.

And we won’t know how great Maple Jordan is until we see his rabbit punch. All the top guards at Cheater U have had it.

  14. Bronco Terrance says:

Hey Morons. Yes, I am talking to all of you posting comments. The Chiefs will finish 3rd in the AFC West with a 9 and 7 record. They will get swept by SD, my Broncos and lose to Oakland. Charles will get hurt and wheels will fall off with your sucky dink and dunk QB.You should be 4 and 4 at best so relax and be ready for the choke job you are about to pull!
