OTC: Could Ben McLemore Go #1 In NBA Draft? / MU QB Job Is Open

“(Jeff) Withey was somewhere between 25 and 35. Now, 15’s not crazy. A lot of people are thinking why not go for a big man who has some experience and can fit the system. I don’t think he’ll go that high but he’s definitely one who has gone up (the draft board) considerably.”
Matt Moore, 810 AM
GH: The NBA draft is next Thursday and the Kansas Jayhawks have more than Withey to watch. Some believe Ben McLemore has a chance to be the number-one overall pick. Read on.

“According to FOX Sports Ohio sources, abundant discussions are taking place in the Cavs’ front office about the possibility of drafting McLemore (with the first overall pick), and how things might unfold if he indeed became the pick.”
Sam Amico, NBA writer, Fox Sports Ohio
GH: McLemore looked more like Xavier Henry down the stretch of last season than he did Derrick Rose. No question he has talent, though. Just not sure he has the ego to make his talent soar.

“I’m not so sure it’s the Cavaliers’ love for McLemore as it is their hesitance with (Nerlens) Noel. Gilbert surely doesn’t want to risk wasting a No. 1 overall pick.”
Jonathan Wasserman, NBA writer, bleacherreport.com

“He’s a kid that’s not ready for the NBA and not ready for the grind.”
Carrington Harrison, on McLemore, 610 AM

“If the Cavaliers do trade their pick, my money is on it going to a team that’s targeting McLemore. Minnesota, according to Darren Wolfson of 1500ESPN, has been rumored to be interested in moving up, as it’s a team in need of an athletic 2-guard. Amico also wrote about the Cavs looking to target Danny Granger of the Pacers, a team that could use McLemore if it decided to move into the top spot.”
Jonathan Wasserman, NBA writer, bleacherreport.com

“Next year’s NBA draft could be the best we’ve seen since 2003.”
Matt Moore, CBSsports.com NBA expert, in an interview with Soren Petro, 810 AM
GH: Could KU score the number-one overall NBA pick in back-to-back drafts? I sure hope Andrew Wiggins is that good. But is he good enough to get you and me to switch back to Time Warner?

“Handful of K-State fans tweeted me the last couple days that Manziel’s tweet (that he can’t wait to get out of College Station) makes him unworthy of the Heisman. A simple ‘Come on’ to that.”
David Ubben, @davidubben, Big 12 writer for ESPN.com, Twitter
GH: The key word here in Ubben’s tweet is “handful.” Okay, so a few obsessed KSU fans continue to hate Johnny Football because they wanted Collin Klein to win the Heisman. Do most in Cat Country even care?

“I don’t see (Bill Snyder) retiring until he can convince someone at K-State that his son Sean is the right guy for the job.”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: Is that what is taking so long?

“This is my moment…I waited all my life.”
Maty Mauk, @Miz_Mauk7_Zou, redshirt freshman quarterback at Mizzou, just the other day, Twitter
GH: Man, I love this tweet! The battle between Mauk and James Franklin should make Columbia one very hot town this August.

“I think by the line, Missouri will be picked to go 5-7. Maybe 6-6. Florida and South Carolina are the two games that can take this (2013 football) season from an okay season to a great season – depending on what you do.”
Gabe DeArmond, 810 AM
GH: Is this Gary Pinkel’s most important season at Mizzou? It is if he wants to coach there in 2014…and I’m not all that sure he does.

“In our never ending quest to improve we must understand that the better we get the harder it becomes to improve. Job gets harder not easier.”
Frank Martin, @FrankMartin_SC, South Carolina’s head basketball coach, Twitter
GH: Am I the only person following college athletics who thinks Frank Martin is full of BS? His sanctimonious crap is just so hard to swallow.

“Judging from what I’ve seen and heard, (Jets) rookie Geno Smith hasn’t blown anybody away, the way Russell Wilson did last season when he walked into the Seahawks’ facility. It’s still early and things could change, but the way this is headed, it’ll be (Mark) Sanchez versus the Bucs in Week 1.”
Rich Cimini, NFL writer, ESPNNewYork.com
GH: And to think the Chiefs could have had Geno…

“The Chiefs are going to block, block, block!”
Kevin Kietzman, continuing to express his unhappiness with the Chiefs for drafting an offensive tackle over Geno Smith, 810 AM
GH: I prefer an extended grilling segment over listening to KK verbally browbeat the Chiefs for not drafting a quarterback with their first pick. But I don’t think I can stand even 30 seconds of whatever Jim Colbert is trying to say during his weekly spots.

“You know what they call (Mike Moustakas) out there behind closed doors, don’t you? They call him Eddie Haskell. Because he’ll tell you one thing and do another.”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM

“They don’t call him Lumpy?”
Danny Clinkscale, 810 AM

“Vin Scully has called games for Dutch Leonard (b. 1909) and Johnny Mize (b. 1913)…and now Yasiel Puig (b. 1990) and Bryce Harper (b. 1992).”
Dave Haller, @HallerDave, Twitter
GH: Vin Scully. Sometimes people are so good at what they do they are allowed overtime.

  1. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Tony Soprano (on bad cell phone connection): “I’m gonna talk fast, the guy you’re looking for is an ex-Russian Commando. He killed 16 Chechyn rebels singlehanded!”

Paulie Gaultiere: “Get the f**k outta here!:

Tony Soprano: “He was with the Interior Ministry! The guy is some kinda Russian Green Beret!”

Paulie Gaultiere: “Tone? Tone, you there??”

Tony Soprano: “Godda….F**K!! (cell phone cuts out)

Paulie Gaultiere (to Christopher Moltisante): “You’re not going to believe this, he killed 16 Czekoslovankians! The guy was an interior decorator!!!!”

I cry laughing everytime I see that clip. classic

  2. Gavin says:

It’ll be interesting to see what happens with McLemore. I’ve seen some reports that indicate his workouts aren’t going t hat well and that he isn’t in great shape. If a team wants to take a #2 guard, I wonder if they might go with Otto Porter instead? I mean, I hope McLemore goes #1, but I really think that would be a surprise.

    • Kyle Rohde says:

I think I’d take Otto Porter over him right now if I’m a NBA GM. Ben’s so wildly talented but I need to see some alpha dog in him to think he’ll ever come close to fulfilling his potential.

  3. J Rok says:

GH: And to think the Chiefs could have had Geno…

Instead they get a middle of the road QB (ranked around 15 roughly depending on what you read) with small hands and a noodle arm, with a much higher price tag. Same old story.

  4. Kyle says:

So you think Geno is going to do better than completing 64% of his passes, 30 TD, 10 Int, QB rating of 98 over the next year and a half? I’ll take that money.

  5. JP says:

I think Geno has a lot in common with another #1 draft pick. Of course I’m speaking about JaMarcus Russell and not Andrew Luck. Geno has bust written all over him, and watching the Jets may be akin to watching the back end of a multi car wreck.

If Moose is Eddie Haskell, would that make Francouer Lumpy and Ned Yost Mr. Rutherford? What the hell does Moose have to do to get sent to Omaha. Making easy outs check, not running out plays check, not doing what he’s told to do check. Unfrickinbelievable!!!!

    • Jerry Mathers says:

I guess that would make George Brett Wally. Billy Butler is Lumpy, Getzy is Whitey, and Gordon is Gilbert. Dayton Moore is Ward, and David Glass is Gus the fireman.

  6. The Smartman says:

Ben is not emotionally mature enough or physically developed enough to handle the NBA grind. If he lasts 5 years in the league I will be impressed.

Geno Smith is in the absolute worst place for his mental development as a QB. The New York Fucking Jets! That’s like being born with one testicle and no Penis. He will NEVER be a productive QB in the NFL. He’s somewhere between Vince Young and Michael Vick, which means he’ll be taking his dog to eat at Cheescake Factory quite a bit.

Only in America can a turd like Frank Martin find “success”. Nice spin on the old cover band saying, “the drunker you get, the better we sound”.

Hey douchebag KK, who are “they”? More made up bullshit from the Iron Chef of sports talk. Why don’t you put balls on menu one day as the secret ingredient you worthless, smelly, vagina of a man.

  7. Phaedrus says:

Frank Martin should write those Successories posters. I’ve never heard the “law of diminishing returns” stated in such an elegant manner. I wonder if ol’ Frank knew that’s what he was talking about.

  8. Kyle says:

Two things about Frank Martin: 1) He is a better coach than what they have now. 2) He was beyond entertaining. He may have spouted all kinds of BS and acted like a tool on the sideline, but as an opposing fan, I loved having him in the B12. His postgame interviews with Weber were classic, especially after a loss.

  9. Kyle says:

J Rok, those are his numbers the last 2 years. So he has a track record of doing it. He will also have a killer running game, so I think he chances are very good.

  10. john says:

the kk eddie haskell bit is classic obvious kk making up stuff. i’m sure lots of baseball players in their 20′s are rolling out leave it to beaver references…

  11. chuck says:

It might be a little early to right off Geno Smith. Admittedly he is not wowing them like Luck and Griffin, but as Carl used to always note, it’s just a bunch of guys running around in their underware so far.

The MU QB battle might be interesting, but as long as Gary Pinkel is coaching the team, we MU guys will always be 2nd or 3rd tier in the SEC. Pinky was great for MU, but it is time to move on.

    • chuck says:

I was channeling Ronny, “write” not “right”.

      :)

      • NOT...Jason Whitlock says:

I don’t think Pinkel wants to be at MU anymore. He was OK with with being a good, but not great Big 12 coach. Now that he’s in the SEC and MU thinks more of their program then what it really was, expectations were high.

So with the high expectations, Pinkel was the year from hell. DUI, starting a small flame war with Paul Finebaum, he keeps the Big 12 Spread, terrible season with a horrible recruiting class.

To top it off he had to fire his offensive coordinator but had to hire from with in because everyone knows Pinkel is on the hot seat and more then likely won’t be the HC at MU to longer.

I think Pinkel was content with just being a good, but not great coach. Don’t be surprised if he’s the HC of a mid major somewhere in 2015 and loving every second of it.

  12. Ultimate Dude says:

Greg, running is bad for you. But hey, the old lady on the cigarette commercials with the hole in her throat from smoking 4 packs a day isn’t keeping me from my half pack a day habbit.

Maty Mauk will have a Chase Daniel type college career. Same size, same good zip on the ball, good football IQ, but the name Maty Mauk itself is just a name meant for Sports Center highlights.

If McLemore goes #1 someone should lose their job.

Keitz will never waver on his love for Geno. And he doesn’t care about making himself look like an idiot. As certain as my employer shutting the doors and laying us off before Obamacare goes into effect.

    Go Spurs

  13. Yost Infection says:

The NBA is in a sad state when Ben McLemore is considered with the #1 pick.

Otto Porter is the better player by far. McLemore is a scorer, Porter is a player

  14. Mick Mcallister says:

Called Martin out on his philosophical BS on twitter once. He called me a Twitter tough guy and block me

Do you have a comment?
