OTC: Dave Armstrong Goes Happy Gilmore On 5’7 Golfer And Gets “Pummeled”

“A former Kansas City Royals television announcer has been ticketed for assault after a scuffle last month at a Jackson County golf course. Dave Armstrong, 59, of Overland Park, is accused of fighting with another golfer during a dispute Nov. 15 at the Fred Arbanas Golf Course in Longview Lake Park.”
Mark Morris, writer, Kansas City Star
GH: My first and only reaction when I read this story in The Star? WTF?

“Armstrong said members of (Gary) Martinez’s group twice hit balls in his direction and he approached them, asking them to stop. ‘I said, ‘Hey buddy, we’re keeping up with the group in front of us. Please don’t hit into us,’ Armstrong said. Armstrong said Martinez responded with an obscenity and struck him. Armstrong said he tried to put Martinez in a headlock, but the two tumbled to the ground. ‘I was getting pummeled in a very defenseless position,’ Armstrong said.”
Mark Morris, writer, Kansas City Star
GH: But somehow Armstrong was the guy who got ticketed. Any chance we could schedule a golf outing with Armstrong and Kietzman?

“Dave Armstrong is 6 foot 7 or more, and Mr. Martinez is 5 foot 8 and 170 pounds. He sustained a broken finger and a serious shoulder injury. It doesn’t take much to figure out who was the aggressor.”
Mike Yonke, a lawyer representing Martinez, Kansas City Star
GH: If the 51-year-old Martinez was able to pummel the foot-taller Armstrong, maybe he should give Sly Stallone a call and star in his next old-guy fighter movie. I hope TWC televises this court case.

  1. Jeff Gelski says:

If The KC Star is not going to allow comments on a story about a sports announcer getting into a fight on the golf course, then what’s the point of ever having comments?

  2. Sounds like Foreman/Ron Lyle, as in complete 360: Armstrong starts out strong and gets the better of his pint-sized opponent before the little guy starts sticking it to Lurch, gets him down on the ground, and starts giving him the business. Over/under on how many “wows” that Armstrong managed to work into the melee? For a one-minute row — I’d say about 10.

WOW! and dave armstrong seemed like such a cool and talented person…. jayhawk nation is truly shaking at it’s core

    • Kyle says:

Uh why? He is a B12 guy, not a KU guy.

    • Jack says:

Seems surprising that no one appears to be reading between the lines on this one. (1) Could it be that somebody thinks they can extort some money from a somewhat public guy? (2) Why does the alleged “victim” (the 5’7″ guy) hire an attorney? Isn’t he represented by the Jackson County prosecutor in the case or is he trying to continue to bluster? Rumor has it that the guy is former Army so how defenseless is he! Again, I ask, could somebody be looking for a little money out of this? (3) Since Armstrong and his buddies left the course to diffuse the situation – and fear of a continued incident in the parking lot – their side of the story was never taken. Great police work Jackson County! (3) How quick people are to jump in and believe whatever is printed without really thinking it through. Try it sometime!

      btw, I’m a Missouri fan.

the awesomeness of this is quite high…

  5. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

My God, I would’ve paid to see that fiasco. I probably would’ve had a siezure laughing my arse off.

  6. SOS says:

The real story here is that Armstrong was playing on a muni track…. Wow!

  7. Tim says:

The loser of the court case, if it goes that far, must work for Roger Twibell at the Robin Nigro Academy.

  8. Biff says:

Golfers that hit into groups are a holes. Should of hit their balls back at them, or throw them into a lake. It is dangerous, I about got into a fight about the same thing . we were putting on the green and these a holes hits right into us. They are just stupid and know nothing about golf or they are A holes..

    • KCMonarch says:

Or because you are spending 10 minutes to read an 8 foot putt because that’s the way you saw Bernard Langer do it. Wow!

  9. Will says:

The row ended when other players separated them. Armstrong said he left the course immediately to defuse the situation.

With his tail between his legs no doubt. WOW!

  10. dangertim says:

Tell that Big 12-loving windbag to stay outta Missouri…especially with his idiotic comments about Mizzou last year (I know he was baited by KK….but he still had to be an ass about it “Why yes! I think Mizzou should BEG the Big XII to let them back in. OF COURSE they regret the move!”)

And I bet he now regrets his “move” to play a muny course in MO.

  11. John Giardino says:

Golf sucks. Get some skates and a hockey stick and settle it for real.

  12. Kansas Marine says:

Dave Armstrong is thanking his lucky stars that people like Jack Harry are still allowed on air.
