OTC: How Good Is Mizzou Football? Can They Be SEC Worthy Again This Season? / Nick Wrong Gets Exposed Again

“I think Missouri’s being a little bit ignored. The preseason polls are out and Missouri’s not in either preseason poll.”
Blair Kerkhoff, KC Star college sports columnist, 810 AM
GH: How good are this season’s MU Tigers without DGB and L’Damian Washington? Without James Franklin? Without Michael Sam? Great programs shake off these kinds of personnel losses each season and roll on to another nine- or ten-win campaign. Is Mizzou football now in that elite stratosphere where they can absorb these hits and still go bit-time bowling? I can’t wait to find out.

“5-7 DID happen just two years ago. I don’t know why that gets washed away. That DID happen!”
Soren Petro, on why MU fans’ expectations should be lowered due to Mizzou’s inaugural football season in the SEC in 2012, 810 AM
GH: Okay, so not everybody is sold that Gary Pinkel’s troops have what it takes to be SEC worthy each fall. That makes it all the more compelling of a story.

“(Mizzou) has got a chance but there are a lot of questions here. There are questions with they’re wide receivers, there are question on defense. There’s too much uncertainty to think of them as a ten-win team out of the box.”
Blair Kerkhoff, KC Star college sports columnist, 810 AM
GH: Ten wins is pretty darn difficult to produce no matter what conference you happen to be in but any of the top five or six conference schedules make that 10-win total increasing hard to reach. The biggest question mark for me is the MU defense and if they have learned anything from the thrashing they took at the hands (and feet) of Auburn. I haven’t seen an undressing of that caliber since Bill Callahan coached Nebraska’s pink shirt defenders and Mark Mangino’s Jayhawks hung 76 on the Huskers.

“What is the expectation for Maty Mauk? There is an expectation that because he played well he’s going to come in and set the world on fire.”
Soren Petro, 810 AM
GH: Yeah, that is kind of what comes with the territory if you are MU’s starting QB. Mauk was sensational as a fill-in starter last season during the heart of Mizzou’s SEC schedule. Should he be expected to be just as good in his third season at MU? Damn straight.

“Somebody’s going to be at the bottom of this (SEC East) Division. I’m not saying it’s going to be Mizzou but I think they’ll be somewhere right in the middle.”
Soren Petro, 810 AM
GH: To MU’s credit and their resurgence the past decade as a football school, “somewhere in the middle  is not going to be good enough. There is a LOT of building, renovating and progress happening at the Columbia campus and much of that is based on the success of the football team. Nobody thought moving to the SEC would be easy.

“Big thing about this (Kansas) team: They believe they’re good & can win. But also humble/smart enough to know it won’t be a given or easy.”
Matt Tait, @mctait, Twitter
GH: This tweet made no sense to me. How humble do you have to be if you are a Kansas football player? That should almost be a birthright.

“These guys are ready for this. These guys are ready or what we’re about to go through the next 44 days or so.”
Ned Yost, Royals Radio
GH: I like 610’s new, “Are you ready, Kansas City?” ad campaign with all the Royals players asking their town if they’re ready for a playoff run. Sungwoo Lee’s final clincher comments at the end of the promo always make me grin.

“We feel pretty good about ourselves. We feel like we’re a pretty good team too. What we take, six out of seven (from Oakland)? That’s pretty good.”
Ned Yost, when asked about his Royals facing the A’s, the team many believe to be the best team in baseball, 810 AM
GH: Ned can be cocky to the point of being an ass. But this is the kind of cockiness that the Royals and Kansas City as a town has long lacked – and needed.

“Salvador Perez, it just seems like he’s so happy every day. It’s awesome to be around him.” N
ate Bukaty
, 810 AM
GH: The world needs more people like Salvy and less people like those who caused and have continued the mess that is Ferguson, Missouri.

“People over reacted to my tweets. I said he was a fraud and I stand by that.”
Nick Wright, after calling local newsman Kris Ketz a fraud on Twitter and then in an interview with Lazlo on The Buzz that tried to tie Ketz to the Ferguson riots and was so ridiculous even Lazlo and Slimfast made fun of Wright for his trumped up breaking news, 96.5
GH: Nick Wright calling anyone a fraud is choice stuff. Nick is the guy who went into 610’s studios AFTER the NFL draft and recorded himself making uncanny predictions about who the Chiefs would draft and then played that recording after the draft as if he had accurately predicted five of the Chiefs’ seven picks. I take almost all of what Nick Wright has to say as something to promote Nick Wright at almost any cost – including his character.

  1. Jim says:

How the Sam Hell did Wright tie anything going on in Furgeson, MO to Kris Ketz? That just seems weird.

  2. Billy Beerbauer says:

Nick tweeted that he was shocked that 102.5 bailed on sportstalk to switch to a country music format.
I can’t fathom why he’s surprised. 102.5 never had local shows, was never going to get local shows, and CBS Sportsradio is a total bore as a whole. If you want to find one bubble in radio righ now, it’s the national sports radio networks. ESPN, CBS NBC, Fox, Yahoo Sports Radio…am I missing any? Add shows from Premiere, Westwood One..one (or more) of the 24-7 sports radio networks are going to go down.
I’ve yet to hear a national show (outside of DP) actually entertain an audience. It’s mostly Rome or Cowherd-types bloviating without much comedic charm or wit to entertain. Yawn.

And CBS Sports Radio is distributed by one of the worst in the business. If Cumulus ever ends up acquiring CBS Radio (CBS Sports Radio is not the same thing), Nick better start looking at exit scenarios. Cumulus does not enjoy spending money on people.

    • Kyle Rohde says:

I didn’t realize that had happened, so KC has 4 country stations. Wow.

      • John says:

I appreciated an alternative to the local sports radio stations in 610 & 810. I’m kind of tired of both stations. I can understand why they did it, but it does not remove my annoyance about the situation. I agree with Billy on DP. I can’t listen to Jim Rome but I did find the CBS show at 5:00 (Brian & Mojo show I believe) entertaining. I’m not sure why KC needs ANOTHER country station. I’m told 1490 AM is CBS Sports radio and 94.9 FM (I believe) is as well but you need HD Radio to listen to it.

    • Juan Pablo says:

      When did that happen?
I would listen sometimes but another local sports station would of been better.

    • Zard says:

Alice Cooper and Steve Van Zant had great radio shows here that of course got canned. Nikki Sixx does a good program but of course you have to be in Springfield to hear it. Is Dr Demento still on?

Travel the country and you will agree: Kansas City has the worst radio in the nation. By far. It’s not even close.

  3. Greg says:

I appreciate Soren’s skepticism. My response would be that if you can anlyze football you saw that in 2013, Missouri’s offense tightened the line splits and had the tight end in the line formation. In 2012 they spread it out and line the tight end wide. We saw what happened, Corbin Berkstresser had to QB many games.

I think 10 wins plus is doable. I think that on the evening of September 27th, after Missouri plays at South Carolina we will know what is possible.

  4. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Mizzou is going to have to lean heavily on their run game, cause their wide receivers aren’t that good. And 5-7 did happen, but was mostly caused by a slew of catastrophic injuries, and an idiot offensive coordinator. Fast forward to year two with a healthy squad and a competent offensive coordinator and you get 12-2. This year? 9 wins max, and that’s only if they win a bowl game.

  5. Juan Pablo says:

MU has a very easy schedule this year, there are 8 easy wins and should add maybe two more wins. The MU and TX am success has shown how over rated the SEC is as a conference.

    • Fred Flintstone says:

MU and aTm have NOT shown how overrated the SEC is. They have however, shown how top heavy the SEC is. The crazy thing is that MU is receiving all the benefits of being in the SEC withOUT having to play an SEC schedule. Congrat’s, it’s good work if you can get it, and they have it. I’d argue that MU’s Big12 schedule up and down was tougher than the schedule they’ve played in the SEC. I’m not knocking MU, you play the schedule you’re given, no “fault” of theirs.

I see a 10 win season at MU. Who the hell is going to beat them besides South Carolina, and (maybe) Florida or Georgia? Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Tennessee, aTm?

There are seven top 25 SEC teams, MU will play only #’s 9,12, & 21 and play only #9 USC on the road.

10 regular season wins……write it down.

      • Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

If the SEC was simply top heavy, you’d think only Alabama & LSU would be winning bowl games. But that’s simply not the case.

        • Fred Flintstone says:

Seriously? Bowl games matter? BS. KU won the Orange Bowl BCS game, are they any good?

There’s only one bowl game that teams go all out for, the National Championship Game.

If bowl games mattered, don’t you think Oklahoma would have a better post season record in non NC games?

          • Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Sure they matter! And I don’t see how KU’s utter failure on capitalizing on their Orange Bowl appearance makes bowl games any less relevant. Ask Charlie Weis and his staff if he’d like to have the extra month of practice and extra tv exposure for their program by going to a bowl game. Bowl games DO matter, otherwise why would ESPN be paying to televise them? Do ALL bowl games determine the ultimate prize? Of course not. But they do mean something and are impactful to the programs playing in them.

            • Fred Flintstone says:

              OK Bowl games matter….
Quick, off the top of your head, tell me who played in the Poulan/Weedeater Bowl last year?

      • Juan Pablo says:

I think I am saying the same thing as you Fred, The SEC is over rated as a conference, The may have a great team or two. but the rest of the SEC conference is the same as the Big 12, Big 10 , Pac 12. Two mediocre Big 12 teams like MU and TXam have had no trouble competing in the SEC.

    • The Salty Iguana says:

“MU has a very easy schedule this year, there are 8 easy wins,” says the Village Idiot, whose team hasn’t even won eight games in the last four seasons. Why don’t you remind us how overrated and aging Bill Snyder is this season after he puts up another 50 spot on your chicken chests Juanita?

      • Juan Pablo says:

The great Bill Snyder that lost to a D2 school last year, is 4-27 vs top 10 teams, 21-40 vs top 25 teams. or the the great Snyder that was a 17 point favorite to TXam and choked away a 15 point lead in the 4th quarter of the biggest game in KSU history that would of had them playing in the National Championship.

        • Joey Gallo says:

          • Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

All true facts. Yet, KU would sell every last sunflower in the state to have Grandpa Bill at the helm instead of the parade of incompetent buffoons they’ve had for the most part.

  6. brett says:

4-0 in the non-con and 5-3 in the SEC would be a solid achievement given the change at quarterback and the loss of 4 receivers.

    9 wins and im happy.

  7. The Independent Rage says:

Why do I have the awful feeling that Nick Wright will be showing back up at some point on the Kansas City airwaves? That guy is Fesco-level of annoying PLUS a good dose of unwanted political opinions just for good measure. If Fesco is “5 seconds and click” for me, then Nick Wright is about 1 second. Nothing fraudulent about it.

  8. R.H. says:

Nick Wright??!?!!!? The wannabe Whitlock? In the words of Chad “Ocho Cinco” Johnson: “Child, please.”

  9. randyraley says:

I’ve known Kris Ketz since he was my news man on AM radio back in 1978 in the Quad Cities. Unless he’s changed, I don’t know of a better guy anywhere. I guess I’m missing a huge chunk of this tweet exchange. Kris is pure class and always has been.

    • JHawkScott says:

He built this up to be some huge deal about exposing a beloved KC person as a FRAUD and then this is what came out. . .

He was upset because Ketz was retreating the looting and not talking about the story the way Nick thought he should and doesn’t share Nick’s bias to the situation. It was soooo stupid and so over the top. And why Nick is such a joke.

      • JHawkScott says:

sorry, shouldn’t type while on the phone at work. “retreating” was supposed to be “re-tweeting”. Nick was pissed because he felt like all Ketz was initially re-tweeting was the looting and damage and that aspect of the “story” and not talking about the portions Nick thought should be highlighted. Basically Nick being an ass. Shocking.

    • Rick says:

I have dealt with Kris Ketz on numerous occasions and with Nick Wright on a few. I would say without a doubt Wright is one of the biggest media sleazeballs I have ever encountered. He acts like some sort of street thug when he actually came from a wealthy family and attended private schools. He’s a total fake and seems to be bitter than he wasn’t born black.
On the other hand, Ketz is just the opposite and comes from a long line of professional TV journalists. Ketz I trust. Nick never.

      • Kyle R says:

I’ve always gotten that sense too, that he’s almost ashamed to be white and that his parents well-off enough to have sent him to the Barstow School. You can do plenty to help the underprivilaged and show your appreciation for the gifts you’ve received without acting ashamed; he just hasn’t realized it yet.

  10. nick says:

Reasons the Royals are in 1st:

    1. Solid Starting Pitching: These dudes just DO NOT give up lots of runs.

    2. Holland/Davis/Herrerra: How many teams, when up after 6, KNOW they’re gonna win. These guys are insanity. Unbelievable.

    3. Outfield defense. Gordon is #1 in WAR, mostly because of his D. Cain has saved how many runs in the outfield this year? Dyson is mostly solid, as is Aoki.

    4. Ability to not let runners on base score: Astonishing how often teams get guys on base and can’t score. Credit pitching AND defense.

    4. Offense of Escobar/Aoki/Dyson/Infante*: At different times of the season, these guys have bailed out KC’s bigger-named sluggers’ butts. (*Infante is in a BIG slump. He needs a break or, at the least, needs to NOT be in the 2 hole. I don’t get it.)

    5. Gordon’s consistent and solid presence.

    5. Butler woke up.

    6. Moustakis is now playing “good enough”.

    7. Royals were due. In the last 25 years, every team in the division has at least 3 division titles, and two of them have 7 in that time. You’d think dumb luck would have gotten the Royals 1 in that time.

    • JHawkScott says:

      2. That makes the recent Minnesota loss even more frustrating. Not sure why he let Ventura blow his lead. . .and also not sure why he burnt Herrera last night in the 9th. That one perplexed me. .. that’s the time to use your non high leverage guys

    • Fred Flintstone says:

Nick, give a bit of that defensive credit to Rusty Koontz whose job it is to “set” the defense in the best position to be for each batter, according to the spray charts he studies ad nauseum.

      • nick says:

I’m trying to think of how many things I’d give more credit to than the manager. Yost is such a HARD guy to root for. Thankfully he’s got a pitching staff that makes it hard for him to mess up.

    • Say What? says:

Moustakas is still awful and has no business being in the lineup against lefties. He’s still at .167 against lefties and just .211 against righties. His defense and power potential at the plate is enough to maybe keep him in the lineup against righties but it’s still bad.

I doubt GMDM looks for a replacement, but he should for at least a year and let Moustakas rake in Omaha and learn to be as close to a complete hitter as possible.

  11. b12 says:

@nick. You’re dead on about Yost being a hard guy to root for. It doesn’t matter what question he is asked by any member of the media…his first word is “No.” then he proceeds to sort of explain why the question is obviously asked by an idiot.

He must be doing a few things right. This team is picking up momentum by the day.

  12. Phaedrus says:

I wish they’d turn 610 to country. The shows they have on now are simply impossible to listen to.

    • Tigerpiper says:

“Dumb and Dumber is the most important movie to our culture since… well since I was born in 1995.” – All 610 personalities

  13. Harry Balczak says:

Ugh…Another country station for KC. In accidentally listening to this new station that eliminated 102.5 the fan I found the music to be especially heinous, the most offensive type of country imaginable. The biggest fear of a person who still listens to terrestrial radio is to have some moron change your favorite station to country, and now it is happening to me. Even worse, I might have to listen to the most boring man on earth, Soren Petro, to get sports coverage at noon as the guys at 610 seem to always be talking about which female celebrity is hotter, or how many dates it took to land their latest chick in the sack…Maybe it is time to look into satellite radio, as much as I hate to spend the money.

  14. keitzman wants an intern says:

Matt “Taint” is an idiot. A shill like Rex Hudler.

  15. John says:

somebody has to be the bottom… im not saying they’re going to be the bottom but…

what a strong take! keep the testosterone coming, it’s working! it’s a great take too. i mean, sure Mizzou has had quite a few ten win seasons in the past decade but one time they only did win 5….

by the way, if you’re taking testosterone, shouldn’t you be getting less fat?

  16. Smith says:

NIck Wright is more self-absorbed than the keynote speaker at a selfie convention.

  17. John says:

Hasn’t making the title game in the second season established that they are at least worthy of playing in the SEC, Greg? Can they compete for another title this year is the real question
