OTC: Is MU’s Maty Mauk Or KSU’s Tyler Lockett More Important To Their Team’s Success This Season?

“I think Maty Mauk is going to have a bigger impact than a guy like Tyler Lockett. I would hesitate to say that Maty Mauk won’t be the most important player in the area to his team.”
Jay Binkley, when asked to name which local college football player would have the biggest impact on his team this season, 610 AM
GH: Binkley was quick to add that he thinks the K-State wide receiver is a supreme talent but it is his opinion that as Mizzou’s quarterback, Mauk will have a better chance to impact his Tigers. I would agree that Mauk’s position gives him the nod over Lockett as far as every-down impact BUT there may not be a better player in the Big 12 or the SEC than Mr. Tyler Lockett. I remember how devastating a weapon David Allen was as a kick returner for KSU and also Tyler’s dad, Kevin as a great wide out. Maybe KSU’s best ever was Darnell McDonald. All three played on that wildly talented yet underachieving 1998 Wildcat team that was bitten by the Sirr Parker miracle. Tyler might do things this fall that no receiver/returner will ever top at KSU.

“I am afraid my expectations for Maty Mauk are too high. Because they are through the roof!”
Steven St. John, on his excitement about Mizzou’s redshirt sophomore quarterback this season, 810 AM
GH: Mauk stunned me and I am sure a few other college football fans with how well he stepped off Mizzou’s bench in the middle of their second SEC season and not only maintained but added to MU’s run toward the SEC title game. Mauk strikes me as a kid who will enjoy the pressure of high expectations.

“(Bill Snyder) just looks as good as he’s ever looked. I don’t know if I can name a time when he won’t be doing this.”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: I have a good friend who just turned 66 and he still plays pick-up basketball games at the local gym a couple of times a week. He looked 60 when he was 50 and he doesn’t look like he’s aged a day the past 15 years. Snyder is one of those guys who has always looked old but never seems to get any older. For college football’s sake, I hope the guy sticks around longer than JoePa did.

“I think the sky is the limit for the potential of Montel (Cozart).”
Charlie Weis, on KU’s sophomore quarterback out of Bishop Miege, 810 AM
GH: Cozart was not nearly as impressive in his varsity debut Mauk was as a redshirt freshman. The state of KU’s offensive line last season might have a lot to do with the discrepancy. Cozart looks to have some talent. I just hope he gets to display it while remaining vertical.

“We still have some holes. We just don’t have as many of them.”
Charlie Weis, assessing his 2014 Jayhawks in an interview with Danny Clinkscale, 810 AM
GH: I like this for KU’s slogan better than the “One Team. One Chant,” motto. When I first heard this slogan on the KU radio ad, I thought the voiceover was saying, “One Team. One Chance.” Talk about getting real in your marketing campaign!

“It’s been six years since (Kansas) has won a road game in this conference. That’s staggering.”
Kurtis Seaboldt, 810 AM
GH: Holy Turner Gill! Damn, that is some stat!

“I think the guy who came off the best (at the Big 12 media days) is (Texas Tech’s) Kliff Kingsbury. The guy just oozes cool.”
Jay Binkley, 610 AM
GH: Who oozes cool in Kansas City? Dom Dwyer? Jamaal Charles? Dayton Moore looks cool but he oozes something else.

“The bottom line is whoever manages failure in this game comes out the best in the end.” Dayton Moore, Fox Sports KC
GH: The Royals should be experts at this skill set.

“It’s our greatest fear realized: Joakim Soria is a Tiger now. Only saving grace is that the Royals aren’t really chasing Detroit anymore.”
Rany Jazayerli, @jazayerli, Twitter GH: I don’t understand why Soria being a Tiger should concern the Royals. We have had more players leave this franchise and go on to achieve postseason success than maybe any other perennial losing team. We are well versed in watching the kids move on and up while we just watch.

“Serious cool in new #USMNT facility that #SportingKC folks envision. Makes KC to soccer what Colo. Springs is to #Olympics.”
Jeff Rosen, @jeff_rosen88, Twitter
GH: Hope this happens. KCK is becoming the next Dubai.

  1. PJ says:

Tyler’s dad is Kevin Lockett. Aaron is Tyler’s uncle.

  2. sporty says:

“One team, one chant, one win.” Dumbest slogan ever.

  3. sporty says:

K-State will be a handful this year. I actually predict a Big 12 Championship. Oklahoma will be very good, however, much of their preseason hype is about beating Alabama last year. Going to be a fun Big 12 season!

    • Kyle says:

      Um no.

    • Juan Pablo says:

This is KSU year. they have a great QB, WR and DL. wit a lot of returning starters. .If they don’t win the big 12 or come close it could be a disaster for KSU. I don’t see them being this good for awhile.

      • Kansas Marine says:

This will be Snyder’s last year. Hopefully he’ll capture that elusive BCS bowl victory.

        • estoniakat says:

Since the BCS no longer exists, that seems unlikely.

          • Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Kansas Marine, fitted for a clownsuit. Either that, or it was the lamest troll attempt ever.

  4. Bob says:

““Serious cool in new #USMNT facility that #SportingKC folks envision. Makes KC to soccer what Colo. Springs is to #Olympics.””

    A money pit?

  5. Smith says:

Our greatest fear? Pretty sure that would be: BREAKING NEWS: ROYALS SIGN YOST TO 3-YEAR EXTENSION

  6. Will says:

“The bottom line is whoever manages failure in this game comes out the best in the end.” Dayton Moore, Fox Sports KC

Sadly, that is EXACTLY how this team conducts all their business on and off the field, with the words “manage failure” stamped on EVERYTHING. Thought, word and deed.

    • Ron says:

Dayton Moore probably was talking about hitters, who are considered to be successful even though they fail 7 out of 10 at bats. I doubt he meant that is how he runs the organization.

  7. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Mauk is going to have trouble finding someone to throw to, with DGB, Lucas, and Washington all gone. And with insiders telling me that Levi Copelin is looking at a year long suspension, Maty’s job just got a little harder.

  8. The Independent Rage says:

“GH: Who oozes cool in Kansas City?”

    Fesco oozes fool.

    • Greg Hall says:

How did I miss this one, TIR? 40 lashes with a book of free Royals tickets for me.

      • The Independent Rage says:

And of course, KK Oozes Tool. But Fesco’s always been the most annoying Fool in this market to me for 16-17 long years now, since I first moved to KC. He takes precedence over even KK when I have to take my pick amongst the two blowhards.

  9. Juan Pablo says:

(Bill Snyder) just looks as good as he’s ever looked. I don’t know if I can name a time when he won’t be doing this.”
    Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM

This is a bunch of BS. Snyder looks, acts and talks like this may be his last year. A couple of times last year Snyder said he hopes his son takes over the job. I bet this is his last year as Snyder did not want the new coach to have a tough schedule with Auburn and 5 Big 12 road games KSU has this year. . Snyder has a bunch of cupcakes scheduled for the new coach the next few years to make it easy on a new coach.

    • Richard Cranium says:

It makes NO difference who they bring in. If his son takes over, the program is going to nose dive. If they bring someone else in, the program is going to nose dive. Old Man Balls has to be the ONLY human on earth that can carry that program to the heights it has achieved. Being somewhat of a Catbacker Hater I still have nothing but the ultimate praise and amazement in what that man has done. It is a shit-hole location, it’s got asinine hillbilly rednecks that support it, and the stadium is built on a 1970 model with shit thrown on top of it. Yet he still manages to do what he does. He must have naked pictures of Jesus with…….well you get my drift.

      • sporty says:

Wow, somebody has a little inferiority complex where K-State is concerned. “Redneck hillbillies”, huh? I guess 1/2 their fanbase being from Johnson County makes them rednecks…..wow.

        • Kyle says:

        • Richard Cranium says:

Did you just seriously state that 1/2 of their fan base lives in Johnson County? What imaginary world do you live in? Have you ever even BEEN west of Topeka?

          • sporty says:

What’s your point? Of course west of Topeka is big K-State country. That doesn’t mean Johnson Co doesn’t have a very large K-State fan base, as well. Sheesh.

          • sporty says:

For the record, being a farmer or rancher doesn’t make you a redneck or hillbilly. Usually, it makes you pretty wealthy.

            • Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

HA! Small town farmers like I grew up with were far from wealthy. Oh and yes, you can be a redneck/hillbilly and be wealthy. The two are not mutually exclusive.

      • Kyle R says:

Most of the point stands though. He’s an incredible coach and it’s hard to imagine anybody else being able to carry that mantle when he’s gone, even his kid.

    • sporty says:

      Ummm, okkkk.

    • Greg Hall says:

Snyder has looked and talked like that since I was working at The Star. I remember asking him at a mid-90s Big 12 media event how much longer he thought he would coach. “Are you suggesting something?” he deadpanned.

      • Juan Pablo says:

He looks real old and slow to me now, he does not have the same fire he use to. and last year he talked about wanting his son to take over.
I give him this year and maybe next year tops.
It will be better for KSU in the long run to get a new coach in that can be successful. it may take a few coaches but its time to move on.

        • The Salty Iguana says:

Why don’t you tell everyone again how there’s no difference between the football programs at MU, KSU and ku again Juan? You keep hoping Snyder retires and he will keep putting up a 50 spot on the girls of kansas football.

Bill Snyder has accomplished more in 25 years at K State than the entire 120 year history of chicken hawk “football.”

          • red says:

Snyder has won two conference championships — losing both subsequent bowl games. KU has 5 B8 championships and a BCS bowl win. Neither team has really accomplished much.

          • Juan Pablo says:

KU is 65-41 vs KSU. Snyder has won one bowl game in the last decade. KU has won three. Snyder is a nice coach but may be the most over rated coach in history. A lot of coaches has taken over bad programs and made them winners. What are some of Bill Snyder’s great accomplishments ? 4-27 vs top 10 teams? Snyder is great at beating bad teams.

            • The Salty Iguana says:

Coach Snyder has won 185 games and is 18-4 vs your pitiful program. For you to criticize him shows how pathetic you are. Hell it might take ku 60 YEARS to win that many games. Bill is going to be around for many more years which means you ain’t beating the Wildcats for a long time. Bill Snyder is great at winning. kansas is great at losing. Really great.

Overrated? Undoubtedly you are the most ignorant and unintelligent person here. Like most beaks you are clueless about football. Stick to indoor sports that is all you know.

              Join the Chant!

            • Gale Sayers says:

Trolling went to far there. I think Snyder one of the greatest coaches in history. He took the worst college football program in the country; based in the biggest cow town in major conference football, and made them at the very least one of the top 25 football programs of the last twenty years. Snyder is KSU football, once he is gone they will be back in the toilet.

              • The Salty Iguana says:

As opposed to kansas which has been in the toilet for 120 years and will be there for eternity.

                • Juan Pablo says:

KU has more Conference championships then KSU,

Snyder is 4-27 vs top 10 teams. 21-40 vs top 25 teams, Snyder Chokes in the big games, Has won one bowl game in the last decade. Snyder got a lot of wins vs cupcakes and a Big 12 north that sucked. He is great coach for KSU but would of be fired at a real football school for that record.

                  • Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Just to lob a grenade in here..MU has won more conference championships (12) than both KU and KSU combined. Fire away.

                  • EstoniaKat says:

You probably inventory Helms trophies, as well.

  10. Joe Blow says:

Rany also thought that, if traded, Joakim Soria would have brought in Jesus Montero or Michael Pineda:

    I don’t feel like re-hashing the did-the-Yankees-offer-Jesus-Montero-or-not discussion.

That was when people thought it would have been an absolute steal to get Montero for Soria.

Jesus Montero wouldn’t fit the Royals’ roster at all, but then you see what Montero finally brought back – Michael Pineda – and you try to envision what the Royals’ rotation would like with him at the front of it.

That was when people thought we could have got Pineda for Soria.

None of that would have worked — in fact, it would have been a big pile of disappointment — but Rany doesn’t really acknowledge that. He still likes to talk shit about Soria on other teams, though..

    • red says:

rany would have then crushed the royals for misevaluating montero or pineda. He is terrible radio.

  11. Kansas Marine says:

“(Bill Snyder) just looks as good as he’s ever looked. I don’t know if I can name a time when he won’t be doing this.” -Kevin KIetzman

Coach Snyder may or may not be healthy, but he looks older than my 95 year old grandfather and the majority of his friends. He has noted health problems. KK’s comments echo the fear he and his brethren know is coming when Snyder steps down.

    • sporty says:

K-State will be just fine when Bill Snyder retires. The ku fans wishing otherwise are hilarious. ku will still stink, no matter who their coach is. HAHAHA

      • Richard Cranium says:

This has already played out once. How did that work for when Bill Snyder retired? Blind eyes see very little sportsnut.

        • sporty says:

As bad as Ron Prince was, he still won more games than Gill and Weis combined. K-State will be just fine. Ku? HAHAHA!
