OTC: Mizzou Gets Shaw-Shanked In Homecoming Nightmare / 17-0 4thQ Lead Gone!

“Shaw-Shank.”
Nickname for Mizzou’s latest sports tragic comedy that turned a 17-0 fourth quarter lead over South Carolina into a 27-24 overtime loss thanks to the brilliant play of the Cocks’ Connor Shaw and MU’s Andrew Bagett shanked 24-yard field goal attempt to close out the double-overtime loss
GH: I am not sure who is credited with this brilliant moniker but it joins the Flea-Kicker and the Fifth Down as one of Mizzou’s most classic painful losses.

“They are renovating Faurot Field right now, adding suites and seats to the Missouri stadium’s east side. That should only be a start. What they really need to do is detonate the north end zone. Napalm it. Call in a drone strike on the most haunted plot of land in college football. Add an exorcism to the job list before rebuilding. And just in case the real culprit is the grass hillside behind the end zone, truck all those white rocks that make the ‘M’ out of town and dump them in the nearby Missouri River. The north end zone is where black-and-gold dreams go to die – in spectacular fashion. It is a place so profoundly, perversely cursed that it is entering the realm of billy goats and the Bambino among the sporting occult. The misery of Missouri football is anchored there.”
Pat Forde, Mizzou alum and columnist for YahooSports.com
GH: This was Forde’s lede to his game column and it was a good one. My son is a sophomore at MU and as I watched the first three quarters of the game Saturday night, I smiled knowing he was forming memories of this Tigers football team that so many MU alums before him had seen turn to nightmares. “Yo, look for the mizzounicorn in the game tonight. It’s chboy!” he texted me prior to the game. He dressed as the unicorn that has become prevalent at many MU sporting events of late. What a great time to be a Tiger, right? Then Shaw-Shank happened. Welp…

“If you make any one of eight to ten plays, we’re talking about what’s the cheapest room in Atlanta instead of how Missouri can still get there and who they need to (win/lose) to help.”
Gabe DeArmond, of PowerMizzou.com, in a Monday morning interview with The Border Patrol, 810 AM
GH: Matt Millen, who was the TV analyst on the ESPN broadcast, kept repeating, “Nothing before this plays matters! The only thing that matters is this play!” Maybe that was a JoePa-ism, but it was one of the dumber things Millen had to say during the game – and he had a lot of dumb things to say during the game.

“I thought we were dead.”
Steve Spurrier, South Carolina’s head coach, YahooSports.com
GH: Spurrier was interviewed on the turf at Faurot just moments after the Cocks’ stunning double-overtime comeback win. He was as surprised as anyone in Columbia that he was heading to the winning locker room. 17-0 in the fourth quarter. Unreal.

“’MIzzouing’ may have found its way into Urban Dictionary tonight.”
Bonnie Bernstein, @BonnieBernstein, Twitter
GH: When I told my wife Sunday morning at the breakfast table that Mizzou had lost she could not believe it. I wonder how many other folks went to bed thinking MU had won only to discover Truman beat Dewey. BTW, KSHB TV 41 ran a scroll beneath a Frank Boal sportscast prematurely announcing that Mizzou remained undefeated with a win over South Carolina. It’s just not Twitter that sometimes acts irresponsibly.

“It’s the same play that’s hurt Missouri for a long time – not just this year. That’s not a complex play and they just ran it over and over and over and over…”
Gabe DeArmond, of PowerMizzou.com, on USC repeatedly beating MU’s defensive pass rush for big chunks of yardage with the screen pass, 810 AM
GH: Andy Reid had to love how Spurrier used the screen pass against Mizzou’s aggressive defensive front. It was deadly and deflating.

“I understand why Gary Pinkel did what he did but…”
Gabe DeArmond, of PowerMizzou.com, on MU choosing to take a knee at the end of regulation despite having 42 seconds remaining in the tie game, 810 AM
GH: Pinkel ignored the momentum that Connor Shaw had built for South Carolina in the fourth quarter and chose to forego a run at a last-second field goal. I just don’t understand playing it THAT conservative at home. Taking a knee just should not be what Missouri is about in the SEC.

“One thing that (South Carolina) game did is (justify the importance of James Franklin to MU’s offense). There’s no Grbac/Gannon discussion when Franklin gets healthy.”
Gabe DeArmond, of PowerMizzou.com, 810 AM
GH: Way too little was said before this game about how Maty Mauk would react in just his second start against USC’s pass rush. Mauk’s inexperience and youth showed in the teeth of the pressure. But – BUT – he delivered a 17-0 fourth-quarter lead to one of the SEC’s best defenses. It should have been enough.

“Connor Shaw’s passer rating vs. Missouri over the past two years is 188.6: 40-of-50 passing, 450 yards, 5 TD.”
David Morrison, @DavidCMorrison, Twitter
GH: Lost in all the Mizzou misery is the brilliance of the injured Connor Shaw and his heroic play in the fourth quarter. He was obviously not at full speed but he answered the call when his team needed him…and then some.

“I guarantee more KU fans are watching MU right now than their own game. And I don’t blame them. Just don’t pretend you don’t still care.”
Danny Parkins, @DannyParkins, tweeting Saturday night as the KU and MU games were on at the same time, Twitter
GH: Does the MU/KU rivalry still live? Hell, yes.

“At least this night isn’t a total loss. #cocky”
Steven Davis, @Steve_Davis3, son of KU’s Bob Davis and current voice of UMKC basketball, Twitter
GH: If you can’t beat ‘em (or anybody), revel in your rival’s misery. It might seem unseemly but this is what college sports is about – emotions stripped bare and on display for all. And that is not always pretty. Read on.

“Horrible people “@PlannedSickDays: Twitter mentions for Mizzou’s kicker: People are the worst (strong language) sbn.to/17R4H0y”
Jon Miller, @HawkeyeNation, on the many cruel tweets directed at MU’s placekicker, Twitter

“I read @ABaggett99 mentions this morning in absolute shock. Unreal how cruel people can be. It’s a team game, guys. My goodness.”
T.J. Moe, former MU receiver, @TJMoe28, on the cruel tweets Twitter
GH: People are often publicly polite but privately insane when it comes to their sports teams or their rivals’ teams. Twitter just lifts the veneer of politeness and exposes what people think and say inside their home, at the bar or the club. And it’s not just Mizzou fans. These fans live next door to all of us – or possibly even closer.

“Some of you give a classy fan base like Alabama a bad name. Go back to your holes and let the rational Tide fans speak on your behalf. Shhhh”
Kirk Herbstreit, @KirkHerbstreit, Twitter
GH: Even Bama – who wins everything – has not jobs as fans.

“There really should be a running clock last 10 mins of a game like this. Meaningless football rite now.”
Gary Bedore, KU beat writer for KUSports.com, tweeting during Baylor’s 59-14 win at KU, @GaryBedore, Twitter
GH: It probably wouldn’t upset too many Jayhawks fans if the Big 12 excused Charlie Weis’ team from their remaining five games. How ugly is that finale against K-State (who looks to be rebounding from their sluggish start) going to be in Lawrence November 30th? There will be more purple in Memorial Stadium that day than on Charlie’s whipped ass.

  1. Jim says:

Better headline would have been “Tigers choke on Cocks”. But, I understand that might be a bit over the top. Tragic ending for MU. I was in a packed MU bar when it all came down. Crickets.

  2. Kyle says:

“Cock-Blocked” was what I was hoping for as a headline.

  3. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Dave Steckel’s incompetence at defensive playcalling was painfully evident. South Carolina has 4th and goal from the 15 where it was touchdown or game over. Somehow, Steckel thinks going man to man is a good idea. What an idiot. Rush three (Sam, Ray, & Ealy) drop 8 on the goal line and make them throw it in front of you. Tackle. Game over.

On a lighter note, Michael Sam continues to play like a 1st team All SEC player.

Don’t be suprised if James Franklin is back for the Kentucky game. He’s already throwing passes in practice.

  4. Say What? says:

Not dropping 9 guys to around to the goal line and in the end zone on 4th down from the 15 in the first OT is what lost the game. Unbelievably bad defensive play calling.

  5. Joe Blow says:

The Missouri defensive coaching staff was seen huddling together after the game Googling “screen pass” to try to figure out what the hell it was..

    • Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Have to disagree there. Personally witnessed both Michael Sam and defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski screaming at the defense to watch for a screen pass. Kentrell Brothers got his ass chewed by Steckel for not covering the rb coming out of the backfield on the 3rd and 19 play.

      • Joe Blow says:

The Missouri defense was seen huddling together after the game with a foot up their ass Googling “screen pass” to try to figure out what the hell it was..

  6. Biff says:

MU choking like they have always done, no news here. . Even MU fans know they are losers and knew they would choke some time this year. South Carolina like MU is another loser school that has no national titles, not won a conference championship in 50 years, No BCS bowls . etc.

  7. JP says:

Once again, Missouri slips on the proverbial banana peel. It is like clockwork and they were due. All kidding aside, that was the most painful college football defeat locally since K State losing in the 98 Big XII Championship Game. To be up 17-0 going into the 4th quarter; to scoring first in OT and having S. Carolina at 4th and 15 needing to score or lose the game. It must be painful.

BTW, the cowards bashing on the kicker say more about themselves. Don’t blame him, he didn’t blow a 17 point lead or fail to make a stop in OT.

      • dman says:

“Don’t blame the kicker” says a KU fan who was probably mildly ticked at his punter earlier this year.

Baggett doesn’t deserve the name calling, but he still missed a 24 yard field goal (5 yards longer than an extra point). It was still a pretty pathetic kick. He didn’t lose the game by himself, but he was one of the contributing factors.

I don’t blame him at all for missing a 46 yarder, but you can’t miss one from 24 like that.

    • Joe Blow says:

The vitriol is undeserved, but he did miss two very make-able kicks, including a fuckin 24-YARD field goal. He’s done that multiple times this season. He missed a freakin extra-point. How are you a college kicker that can’t make that?

  8. Chaz Weis says:

Watched the first three quarters in a Mizzou-packed party. Glad I didn’t see the disappointing finish. Did Pinkel play conservatively? I understand the Shaw kid coming in and scoring points, but why did the Mizzou offense stop scoring points?

  9. MightyMo says:

My son has heard the legend of Fifth Down, Tyus Edney, and Kicked Ball. Now he has seen Norfolk State and ShawShank as they happened. Welcome to the club, son.

    • Joe Blow says:

My wife saw the “Missouri Misery!” headline on MSN and went straight to bed while I watched the meltdown on DVR..

  10. Kyle says:

OK Greg, on to the Chiefs please?

  11. john doe says:

Game shouldnt have been that close
SC had a fumble deep in MU territory that should have led to a TD
SC outplayed MU for most of the game.

Missouri was fortunate to be in the position to lose the game in the 2nd OT. That said, win out and they still play to win the diviision. So much for not competing in the SEC.

  12. Buster McFillibuster says:

Bad loss, no doubt. I was there and it was one of those games that had that “oh shit” feeling in the back of your mind. Mizzou played pretty well, but just didn’t close the deal. There is no curse here, but I guess it is fun to blame it on a curse. Baggett has been very, very iffy this year. The extra point in the GA game damn near cost us too. The real culprit in this game was the D-back losing his man on 4th and 15 and giving up that TD in OT. If anyone is to blame, blame him. At the end of the day, we are still 7-1 and leading the SEC East. I’ll take that and I speculate that EVERY Mizzou fan would have too before the season started.

  13. dman says:

I said he was a contributing factor moron, not the only reason they lost. I guess the big words threw you off.

  14. bronze age says:

    but..

Mizzou will still have their wins , against cupcakes..

so they’ll have to sign Pinkel for ANOTHER 5 years!

  15. Diggity Dawg says:

Can we do away with the “KU fans care more about Mizzou than their own team” concept/bullshit? I didn’t even know MU blew a 17 point lead until I read this, 5 DAYS LATER.
