OTC: Royals Let MLB Trade Deadline Pass In Favor Of Dayton Moore’s Untouchables

“The Tigers added David Price. … Everybody around the Royals made moves. The Royals stood pat and Dayton Moore called a press conference.”
Danny Parkins, 610 AM
GH: Whether you were rooting for the Royals to be buyers or sellers as the MLB trade deadline loomed this afternoon, you came away disappointed when Dayton Moore decided to stand pat with his roster. It created some interesting conversations in the media and on Twitter. Read on.

“We’re not going to apologize for our market and what we can’t do. … It’s always a factor.” Dayton Moore, when asked if finances factored into the Royals decision to not get a deal done, MLB trade-deadline presser
GH: What kind of an answer is this??? This is the definition of apologizing for your market size. What “can’t” the Royals do? Are their rules in place in MLB that handcuff the Royals more than the A’s? The Rays? The Tigers? Dayton Moore is so far in over his head in this job that it is embarrassing.

“Please stop saying the Royals did NOTHING. We got Downs, Frasor, Ibanez, and Kratz. What more did you want????”
Royals Review, @royalsreview, Twitter
GH: Read this tweet again with a HEAVY sarcasm font overlaid on it.

“James Shields said he was shocked to see David Price traded (from his former Rays team) into the division. He was not exactly thrilled about this development.”
Andy McCullough, @McCulloughStar, Twitter
GH: Price going to the Tigers doesn’t guarantee the Tigers will win the ALC, since that was probably a likely outcome of this season without the Rays’ ace. What adding Price does for the Tigers is make them even a more dangerous opponent of Oakland’s in the postseason.

“All I can say is…Thank you @DAVIDprice14 for all the wins and memories. Your character is unmatched.”
Evan Longoria, @Evan3Longoria, Twitter
GH: Compare this tweet from Longoria to the unflattering comments he made about James Shields when he left the Rays. I don’t know who the ass is in this feud but I do find it interesting.

“We’re going to continue to look for ways to improve our team. There will be opportunities. We’ll keep looking.”
Dayton Moore, MLB trade-deadline presser
GH: Not quite what you want to hear from your GM an hour after the trade deadline has passed. I am guessing the Tigers GM’s message was a bit different today.

“In a small way, it feels like we made a trade.” – Dayton Moore at 4:15, probably.”
Danny Parkins, @DannyParkins, Twitter

“They’ll add a few offensive guys in the offseason, I’m sure.”
Rex Hudler, when asked by Danny Parkins to say something to make Royals fans feel better, 610 AM
GH: That makes me feel happy that football is only a month away.

“We’re going to maintain our strength…which is our starting pitching. So it didn’t make a lot of sense to take away from that to add a big-time bat.”
Dayton Moore, on one of the reasons the Royals made no moves for a power bat, MLB trade-deadline presser
GH: What doesn’t make sense is maintain a GM who has not sniffed the playoffs in eight seasons.

“While the rest of baseball plays Chess, DM isn’t even playing checkers, he’s playing connect four.”
Jeff Herr, @TheJeffReport, Twitter

“The #Royals rank last in both OPS and HR and to boost the offense they did absolutely nothing.. In year 8. I’m done.”
Dr. Koppe, @TKoppe22, Twitter

“Not necessarily. When you look at it, it makes perfect sense. It’s not really a surprise.” Dayton Moore, when asked if he was surprised by Oakland’s willingness to deal Yoenis Cespedes, MLB trade-deadline presser
GH: Moore is just too cool to be floored like the rest of us over an out-of-the-blue blockbuster trade like this one. Dayton is either a fool, phony or he thinks we are fools. Pretending to be on top of this trqade also makes him look all the worse for not being in the middle of it by offering the A’s James Shields, Billy Butler and Slugerrr.

“We were prepared to make moves with prospects. There was nothing presented to us that made us uncomfortable, but certainly not out of the running. … It wouldn’t have been significant upgrades over what we had.”
Dayton Moore, MLB trade-deadline presser
GH: Prospects? We’re talking about PROSPECTS? Jim Mora is even chuckling over the Royals offering prospects instead of Dayton’s untouchable roster.

“When you look at the players that were available…we just couldn’t get ‘em.”
Dayton Moore, MLB trade-deadline presser
GH: Finally. A statement that rings of some truth. Dayton could have skipped his presser and tweeted this comment out to the media and gone and scarfed down a rib dinner at Oklahoma Joe’s. (I had my second such there meal this week today.)

“Dayton Moore is always a likeable guy but that was not – I repeat – that was NOT his best news conference. He stumbled and stammered and had to correct himself. … That was not Dayton Moore’s best moment.”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: KK knows an uncomfortable conversation when he hears one and this was definitely one of those.

“I felt good about this group from the first day on and I feel good about them now.”
Ned Yost, 810 AM
GH: Translation: “My sense of ‘feel’ is broken. It’s spinal.”

“If you’d have seen the effort to try and improve the club. … It wasn’t for lack of trying.” Ned Yost, on the Royals inability to add offense via a late trade, 810 AM
GH: Translation: “Dayton locked himself in the toilet and I could hear him whimpering in there.”

“All the moves … today makes me want to quit the #royals season more than any losing streak.”
Curtis Kitchen, @curtiskitchen, Twitter
GH: But few of us will quit this mismanaged franchise of David Glass’. They may not win, they may not provide the proper number of t-shirts and they may not be wily traders. But they are ours. Be glad there is next year. Be Royal.
